Repharm Products: Caps and Zero Comedown kit Reported by argh_01 / Submitted 15-10-02 15:18 We take a look at a couple of products on the market from a company called Repharm (www.repharm.co.uk): Caps, a legal stimulant offering an alternative to illegal drugs like speed and ecstasy and Zero, a product designed to alleviate / eliminate the comedown associated with using such drugs. Caps These are capsules containing an extract of Sida Cordifolia, one of several plants containing the drug ephedrine. They come in packs of 6, which cost £8.50 each. Ephedrine is a common drug, present in many over-the-counter cold and flu preparations. It is a stimulant, working in a very similar way to amphetamine, but, because of its slightly different chemistry, it can’t easily get into the brain. For this reason, its “abuse potential” is considered to be lower, and it is legal. The main danger of ephedrine use, which it shares with amphetamine, is its effect on the heart (over-stimulation). One significant danger is that users who expect to feel a high similar to that caused by ecstasy or amphetamine may take ephedrine in high doses, leading to heart problems, and in susceptible individuals, death. The manufacturers of CAPS may have tried to avert this potential problem by pricing their product so highly – a similar dose of ephedrine purchased from an online vitamin store will cost less than a tenth as much. In my experience, CAPS gave me energy and made me feel alert in much the same way as several cups of coffee will do. Zero The Repharm come-down kit, “Zero” contains one multi-vitamin tablet, two anti-oxidant capsules, and 500mg of L-Tryptophan in another capsule, and costs £2.95. The product is designed to minimise the negative effects (“come-down”) after taking ecstasy – it does this in two ways: the anti-oxidants are hoped to aid in the body’s natural recovery process and “mop up” any toxins left by taking drugs and dancing all night; the L-Tryptophan and multi-vitamin tablet help to more quickly replenish the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is depleted by taking ecstasy. There are a couple of flaws in the plan, however: the anti-oxidants are probably most useful while actually using ecstasy – they will help to lessen its negative impact on the body. The L-Tryptophan on the other hand is most useful afterwards, once the ecstasy is gone or going, and the user wants to replace the serotonin that they’ve lost. An additional problem with the Zero kit is that only 500mg of L-Tryptophan is included. This constitutes about 1/2 to 1/3 of the average American’s daily intake of L-Tryptophan, which is not really much of a boost. An alternative and much cheaper strategy for coping with a come-down involves taking a few anti-oxidants while using ecstasy (typically costing around 10p per tablet for vitamin C), and several hundred mg of 5-hydroxy-Tryptophan (“5HTP” ~30p per 100mg tablet) over the 2-3 days after using ecstasy. 5HTP is an amino acid closely related to L-Tryptophan, but it is absorbed much faster, and is therefore more potent. It is also more quickly converted to serotonin in the brain once it has been absorbed from the blood. In my experience with the Zero kit, it did not really alleviate the come-down to any great extent, although I am accustomed to using 5-HTP, so perhaps I expected too much! Additional quotes from other testers: I actually thought it was very good as I really did feel a lot better the next day. Bear in mind I didn't go caning on the saturday after using it (i went out on the friday). It made my piss very green, but I took that as a good sign that it was clearing all the shit out of my body. Kinda think though that having a decent meal and drinking lots of fruit juice and sleep would have had the same effect, but for convenience I would say its very good. Perfect if you are gonna keep going or if you were at a festival or something. Tablets were a bit of a git to swallow, but no harder than 5-HTP or something. I wouldn't rely on them to sort me out alone though, obviously I was aided by rest etc. A clever marketing ploy aimed at clubber's who are forever in search of that elusive holy grail - a drug with no comedown. However, the effects of a weekend of caning it are unlikely to be relieved by the contents of that snazzy little tin. To my mind there's nothing in there to give any additional benefits that my own pack of multi vitamins from Boots and a few 5-HTP capsules won't do. And they'll do that at what I suspect will be a more budget-friendly price. It's a nice idea, I love the cute little tin but ultimately I don't think it has much proven benefit. A clever gimmick nonetheless.
