Pendragon - Review

An Englishman, an Australian and a South African go into a club and the Englishman says...
"I don't like this, the music is too techno and I have only recognised about 2 tracks all night. It's too repetitive and it's the weirdest collection of oddballs I've ever seen! The words "cat", "dragged" and "in" spring to mind." as he sways apathetically on the dance floor. (Note: We think the lack of enjoyment may also have been down to said person going to said venue the night before and staying out until well past their bedtime.) Highlight of his night was towards the end of Oberon's set when Prime Mover's remix of X vs Y boomed from the sound system, a tune that was rapturously welcomed and moved the virtually static lad from rolling start into 5th gear with an open highway beckoning. In terms of energising the rest of the crowd for the Nu Energy Collective who were up next, it worked a treat. (It's a shame that the engine died after that and he took the country road turn off.) Of Mark Sinclair's set, he thought it was a good finish to the evening, quite varied in styles but not a blinder like ones in the past. "It has to be said however, that seeing Oberon and Beamish play out together is an all too rare occurrence these days, and even if the music didn't move the earth beneath the chunky soles of my trainers, it was a welcome return to the fridge for two dj's whose technical skills are undeniable."
The serious ramblings of an Englishman.
The Australian says: "Wow, this is brilliant!" and dances all night until her feet are blistered and she has burnt off enough calories to justify a Sunday on the couch, stuffing her face with take out and cookies. She loves the music, the decor and the people , and rates it as the best night out since the Gatecrasher Black and White Ball, and has increased her enjoyment supply to last her for the upcoming 3 weeks that she'll be back in Australia. She thinks the whole night is just such an eclectic mix of clubbers (euphemism for freak show!) and finds it so interesting to see all these people in one room together.
The succinct thoughts of the Aussie.
The South African, me (should I be admitting that?), thinks that the night definitely has it's amazing moments. It started off well and ended well but Beamish and Oberon's mixture of what can be best described as a blend of hard, dark trance and tech-trance was not really what I was in the mood for. I had mentally set myself up for night of pinch-me-I'm-dreaming dancey trance as I've heard at other Pendragon nights, so Beamish and Oberon's sets were not getting the ol' adrenal glands working to maximum capacity. After that, it was all beautiful and bouncy and I loved it although no tracks really stood out. (Someone please do a check to see how often the word bouncy appears in HarderFaster reviews, I'm sure when archaeologists in the future dig them up, they will wonder if our species knew how to dance, or walk for that matter.) I was not constantly calling Shazam and causing my phone bill pages to run into double figures but at the same time, I still did not want to go home. (Shazam, for those of you that are not familiar with it, is a service where you dial in for about 30 seconds, they hang up and then text you back the name of the track and in my experience, almost always works. Quite dangerous really, at 50 pence a pop, especially if you are happy on beer gas!)
The analytical critique of the South African.
But we all agreed that:
The Live Set by Nu Energy Collective (Kevin Energy, Sharkey and K Complex) was spectacularly and amazingly mind-blowing, not even the thesaurus has a suitable word to describe it. If I could swear on this page, I would. It was one of those moments that you stand there and go "Wow, this is why I love clubbing so much!" as some guy with green body paint bounds across the stage umpteen times. Think Ultra Sonic meets the Prodigy and you'll get the picture. The decor was enchanting, we are not talking 6-year-old finger paint and some sticky tape, it was a real addition to the ambience. The stilt walkers, the fireworks, confetti, lasers just added to the effects of the music making the night beautifully choreographed. As usual, the atmosphere in the Fridge was wild and infectious. (You should've seen the group of four Czech girls going for it. If this were the dance Olympics, as usual for that part of the world, they were in with
gold!) We still rate this as THE place to go for the crowd. Some parents' hearts must have violently seized as their kids left to go out for the night and we could've just passed the time people watching and not got bored. Even if you were not that keen on the music, you would have still easily had a good time and found some tunes to work those calves to and be amused at the spectacle around you. The second room was a pile of pooh. (Sorry guys!)
