Manchester Gets Toasted! Reported by Frantic Ben / Submitted 11-06-03 11:19 Recently, Manchester has been overwhelmed by hard house nights. I think you’d agree that in addition to the well established club nights (like Sinergy and Good Greef in Manchester), new and smaller nights should be encouraged. However, as a recent trip to ‘Temper’ proved, sometimes you wonder why people bother and why you bothered going. Lack of friendly clubbers, quality DJs, and atmosphere = lack of good time and any interest in returning. ‘Toast’ launched last Saturday and promised Manchester’s hard house enthusiasts something a bit different. It’s on every other Saturday afternoon from 1pm- 8pm at ‘The Attic’ on Oxford Road which is less than a minute’s walk from oxford road train station. Its only two quid to get in, (three after four o’clock). Good for a warm up to a night out (its conveniently on the same day as Good Greef), or just somewhere to go and enjoy yourself on a spare Saturday afternoon. You can’t have too much hard house now can you? Weather on 31st was more suited for sunbathing than clubbing which was OK because people could escape outside to cool down or enjoy the sun when they wanted. Once paid up, you can come and go as you please. The venue is small, holding about 400 people and is divided into two levels. Rumour has it that, due to the success of the launch, future Toasts will have breaks and tribal/ funky house downstairs in room two - a relaxed pub style room. Upstairs, the main room has a proper club style set up. Music was quality hard house and trance. For such a new and small event, the line up was impressive. When I arrived, Good Greef resident Alex Kidd was playing his trademark hard trance. Loads of people were on their feet and having a good stomp, despite it being far too hot for such activities. Thanks to Little Miss Natalie and Andy Whitby amongst others for banging sets which managed to keep the crowd on their feet. A very special mention must go to Toast resident DJ Morgan (not the American one), who was “AMAZING” as one punter repeatedly screamed throughout his set. He wasn’t put off though and treated the crowd to a hard and techy set which included some very clever use of effects and superb scratching. It was really nice to see someone put so much effort into their mixing and the crowd certainly appreciated it. Little known at the moment, he is surely one to watch out for in the future. Atmosphere inside was good. Smiles all round, and no-one caused any trouble. I managed to get a few words with joint promoter Mark McClure who said. “ We’re really happy with the way things have gone today. We’ve recently expanded from running Toast in nearby Preston where it has a bit of a cult following. Few of our Preston regulars are here, but we’ve managed to bring the friendly, unpretentious vibe to Manchester all the same. The next one should be even better”. I’d have to agree with him. Everyone was well into the music and having a good time. People generally seemed to love the fact that they could get all the bonuses of going clubbing, (listening to quality tunes, meeting new people, and having a great time), on a Saturday afternoon. Sinergy meets lunchtime drink in your local is about the best I can describe it as, or for all you Londoners, XLR8 at George 4th ….. but before and not after a night out. Temperature in the main room meant that the entrance door had to be kept open and locals were moaning about the noise. Apparently you could hear it from the train station. Quality! Some people clearly don’t know a good thing when they see (hear) it. I’d like to think I do and would certainly recommend a visit to Toast. Message Board and info @ www.skiddle.com/toast.
