Goodgreef @ Tall Trees, Yarm - 21/2/04 review Reported by GeordieLee / Submitted 24-02-04 16:16 Goodgreef returned north to Tall Trees in Yarm for the first time in 2004 on Saturday 21st February and delivered a superb night of trance and techno that had the whole place buzzing. It was as if the GG team had never been away. On arrival at Tall Trees Hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were at the wrong place. Set back off the A1044 in Yarm, Cleveland, this luxurious country club offers clubbers a completely different clubbing experience. When it is a nightclub, it is one of the biggest there is. In fact, it is more like several nightclubs packed under one roof. On going into the club, you are confronted by a large, fairly luxurious looking bar above a lit swimming pool, viewable through a glass enclosed area. With a second area and upstairs also open, meaning that there are bars scattered all over the club, and an outside area which opens in the summer, it is a superb place to be. A perfect setting for what was to prove to be a great night. First up on the decks in the main room (a.k.a Club M) was Dave Stewart. Club M is on the very bottom of the Tall Trees complex, has a sizeable dance floor in the centre, a stage, plenty of space around the edges to mingle, three bars and a DJ booth that is in the perfect position. All eyes are on the DJ from almost anywhere and you can even go up a level and watch proceedings from the balcony above. Real DJ stalkers can even stand behind the booth and watch their heroes in action. On this particular occasion, it didn’t take long for Stewart’s techno tunes to fill the dance floor as he showed that he was one to watch for the future. Playing tech-house before moving onto techno and finishing with the Carl Cox bootleg of Pontape, the fact that he got the crowd going so early in the night can only be a good sign. This won’t be the last time you’ll be hearing his name spoke of in high regard. Perhaps strangely, a trance set by Adam Sheridan followed this. With Fergie also booked to play techno that night, it would have worked better if he had continued what Stewart had started. It wasn’t to be, however, and the set from Sheridan cannot be faulted. This man seems to be going from strength to strength at the moment, with a debut essential mix on Radio One under his belt as well, all the plaudits are heading his way at the moment. And, on the evidence of this set which included PVD featuring Second Sun - Crush, all this is deservedly so as well. From trance, it was back to techno. Banging techno from Fergie in fact. I’m not the biggest fan of techno but for some reason I found this set to be pretty good. If you knew me, you’d know that those were kind words indeed. The dance floor was packed at this point and, like many others around me, I couldn’t help but keep dancing. Fergie seemed to be loving it as much as the crowd too. The only thing that spoilt it for me was when he started MCing over his set. There was little need for him to do it as much as he did but I suppose when you’re loving it, you just have to show it! The best was saved until last though. It seems you either love him or hate him but Eddie Halliwell doesn’t seem to care what you think. This was one of the best set’s I’ve ever seen Halliwell play and, just like Fergie before him, he seemed to be loving every minute of it. Eddie has always been a show-off. I don’t find anything particularly wrong with this though because it’s good to see a DJ enjoy his job so much. The energy he creates behind the decks transfers into the crowd and that is a recipe for one hell of a good time. As it proved to be. Tunes such as Tiesto’s Traffic, Kay D Smith & Marc Tall - Passive Resistance, Loops and Things and Picotto’s Lizard had the crowd in raptures, it made me remember why I loved clubbing in the first place. And when he got up and stood on the decks, hands raised, during his final tune, Carte Blanche, it was just the perfect tune for the perfect action for the perfect moment. That summed up the night for me. What more can I say!
