Interview with Riley and Durrant
Reported by Shaun

Riley and Durrant are the trance back to back team that are taking 2004 by storm! With forthcoming gigs at the likes of Crasher, Creamfields, Judgmenrt Sundays and Tidy Weekender, this dynamite duo have a big future ahead of them! They make a rare London appearance at this Saturday’s becomeone and I caught up with them for some chat...
How did each of you become involved in DJ-ing and producing?
Andi worked his way up through radio starting as a tea boy at Kiss FM before getting his own shows on Galaxy, and Nick got started by putting on events and club nights in Sheffield in the mid 90s before getting picked up by Crasher.
You are now best known as a DJ partnership rather than individual DJs – how did this partnership come about?
We met at Gatecrasher a few years ago and didn’t get on very well.. actually...there was some hatred but after playing on the same line ups a couple of times we got talking, Nick came on the radio show and we started working on bits of music together. A couple of years ago we set up our production company Distorted and moved into our office and studio.
Successful back to back’s over the years have consisted of two DJs who have had a completely wedded sense of musical taste and set structure, the greatest example of this is the legendary Sasha and Digweed combination. Do you feel that you have this connection between the two of you? Do you ever argue over what tunes to play out?
As we have pretty identical musical tastes, there definitely is a connection between us. We always argue about which tracks we are going to play out, but we always manage to sort it out using fists or a big stick...
Your gig schedule for the next six months reads like a rollcall of the biggest trance/hard clubs in the UK. You are playing at Crasher, Passion, Creamfields, Slinky and the Tidy Weekender amongst many others. Do you believe that these bigger clubs are still leading the UK trance and hard scenes? Is it still every trance DJ’s dream to play for Gatecrasher in your opinion?
The bigger clubs do still lead the way because of their reputations, and the extra funds and staff they have to put on amazing parties, but there are some really enthusiastic younger promoters who are putting on awesome nights all across the country. Playing at Gatecrasher is surely still up there with most trance DJs ideal gigs.. the atmosphere, crowds and electricity at all the events is incredible
You are playing at becomeone this Saturday in London. Having already played at Wildchild & Crasher in London, what is your impression of the scene down here?
From what we have witnessed of the London scene, its looks very healthy indeed, we had a great gig at Peach back in January. It was great to play there as I (Nick) grew up in London and it was one of the first clubs I went to. Both Wildchild and Crasher were superb, and it seems proper pure trance is on the way up in London! It will be our first time playing at Turnmills for becomeone so we’re really excited.
You have 3 dates in Ibiza this year with Judgment Sunday and Slinky at Eden and Cream at Amnesia. The obituary of Ibiza has been written many times before – what is it about the Island in your opinions that makes it the number one clubbing destination in the world, year after year?
I think it’s simply the fact that every night there’s an amazing party to go to, it’s full of beautiful girls and boys in very little clothes, it’s a gorgeous place with gorgeous weather... and it’s awash with myth and legend! A lot of the scummy people don’t go anymore because they think it’s too expensive, so the whole “Ibiza uncovered” type crowd aren’t around so much.
You both present weekly shows on the Galaxy network, with dance music currently experiencing a dip in popularity, how important a role do you think radio plays in introducing new people to the music?
Andi: It’s probably the most important outlet for young people getting into dance music now. It’s also good exposure for young Djs and Producers which is why we pursueded Galaxy to let us do the “nu breed” show where we have up-and-coming people on the show to play some of their own stuff and do a hotmix. I also sit in on playlist meetings quite often, and try push some of the more credible or young producers tracks.
Your recent remix of the Lustral classic ‘Everytime’ is only available on dance music download site www.audioijelly.com. With legal download sites so popular do you think this signals the beginning of the end for vinyl production?
Nick: When I first got into DJing 9 years ago, I was told vinyl was on its way out and should invest in CD decks! I think vinyl will still be about for sometime yet, however with the new wave of CD decks on the market and the simplicity of downloading tracks, times are definitely changing. Saying that, it’s still nice to touch vinyl and go out and record shopping, searching through all the racks for the best stuff.
You both produced the Tiesto-cained ‘Candesco’ and have done remixes in the past year for the likes of the Space Brothers and Armin Van Buuren. Do you believe that in order to be successful as DJs nowadays it is also vital to be a producer? Is this ultimately what separates the wheat from the chaff?
Andi: Totally! Back in the day being able to mix 2 records together guaranteed you a place in the DJ A List. Nowadays Technics outsell guitars and I could teach my grandma to mix in 15mins, so unless you’re doing something special like Eddie Halliwell you have be making successful music. The DJ/Artist lines are blurring now so anybody starting a career should probably get in the studio first.
You are having a big summer BBQ – what DJs would you ask to play the tunes for you and why?
Jimmy Saville.. the original badbwoy... he lives in a big park in Leeds to so it wouldn’t be far to travel.
To give HarderFaster viewers an idea about what sound you represent, what are the top 5 tunes in your boxes at the moment?
1. Riley & Durrant – Feels Like Home (CDR)
2. Escade – Shuffle Royale (White)
3. Alphazone – Revelation (Nukleuz)
4. ProSonic – Ready 4 Life (Riley & Durrant mix) United nl

In June we welcome three debutants to the becomeone decks as well as your residents Tim Davison and Shaun Rowland.
Nick Riley and Andi Durrant are the newly installed residents at the UK’s biggest and best trance club – Gatecrasher. They have a massive year ahead of them with mind blowing gigs planned for Cream (Ibiza and Liverpool), Creamfields, Passion, Goodgreef, Judgement Sunday, Wildchild, Crasher and many more. They are rapidly becoming known as the best trance back to back partnership in the UK and their forthcoming gig schedule shows that they have a very bright future! As well as rocking clubs up and down the UK they also find the time to turn their hand to production - Last year they had a massive trance hit with the Tiesto cained ‘Candesco’ and have also remixed artists such as Armin Van Buuren, Lustral and The Space Brothers. Andi Durrant is the voice of Galaxy 105fm’s biggest dance show ‘The big night in’ which is broadcast weekly on Friday nights and he also presents the ‘Nu-Breed’ show with Nick on Saturday nights, For more information on his shows go to here. We are extremely lucky to be in amongst their busy schedule for this year – make sure you don’t miss this set!
Dave Parkinson is one half of one of hard dance’s biggest production outfits Prime Mover. Prime Mover are responsible for some of the biggest tunes to have rocked hard dance dancefloors over the past few years including the massive ‘Feel what I feel,’ the seminal ‘Black Dogs’ and ‘Here’s Johnny.’ As well as producing hard dance they can also knock out the trance as well under their Revolution 9 guise and their production ‘The Weapon’ was a massive tune for Paul Van Dyk. They have recently begun to delve more into the world of live PAs and have performed at Twisted in London – guitars and all! We will see Dave Parkinson make an exclusive DJ appearance for us and he will be closing the evening with explosive hard dance and trance!
Guy Hornsby is a WiLDCHiLD ‘superkid’ and is one of London’s nu-breed of house Djs. Guy will be opening up becomeone with some jacking electro, tech and funky house. Get there early to catch this superkid in action!
As usual there will be specials on the drinks between 14:00 and 16:00.
So there you have it! The perfect summer sizzler!
