Mile High interview with London’s favourite Hard Dance daughter – Miss Donna Birt

Ah…the life of an international superstar DJ! How much hardship they must go through – flying back and fourth between the southern & northern hemisphere a few times a year, being personally requested to fly to San Francisco to play, having no time to answer interview when their feet are on the ground so having to do it between gigs on the jet! Well Donna Birt is only just starting her DJ career and already this is the life she is leading! Having burst onto the London Hard Dance scene with devastating effects she is now London’s No.1 Harder Dance daughter! There is virtually nowhere she hasn’t played in the London scene and now she is sowing her seeds outside of London. The Birt Revolution is almost here – and you have front row seats! Flying back from a gig in Australia for HardHouse Academy where she is playing the Main Room, Donna took some time out from her in-flight meal to speak to us about life on the road:
So Miss Birt you have been depriving London of your presence recently and clocking up the air miles – tell us where you’ve been?
Well I’ve certainly been in a cooler climate that’s for sure!… I’ve been fortunate enough to be in NZ on tour with Fevah and also managed to make it to Melbourne and Sydney in Australia as well. It was great to tie-in spending some time with my family and getting to play some great gigs!
Even though you kick started your career in the UK you are now one of the most in-demand Hard Dance DJs in New Zealand. Does it feel strange returning home and having so much support there as well as the UK?
Yeah… it is a little strange. You definitely get treated differently in NZ, I suppose not having the constant exposure to DJs that we have in London means that they are pretty excitable, also being from NZ people like to support their own so they always ensure I have a ball!
What was the highlight of 2004 for you?
That’s a tough one; there have been so many fantastic events… I would have to say (not being biased for this interview of course) being booked for main room HHA this weekend or playing RIOT on my birthday… niiiice
You’ve been going hell for leather in the studio with a whole range of artists from Greg Brookman to Ali Wilson. Any tracks you want to shamelessly plug that we should look out for from the Birt stable?
I have been fortunate enough to work with some really talented producers over the last few months… Ali Wilson and I have a tune called ‘Ruthless’ – which is just that. And Greg Brookman and I have been working on two tunes ‘Groove Junkie’ – which has been signed to Nukleuz and our follow up ‘Rhythm Detox’ which we are fine tuning as we speak. Besides that I have a few little things up my sleeve but you will just have to wait and see…
Tell us about Miss Spurt? ( Ed)
Hmmmmm…. Well that’s quite amusing and even a tad embarrassing... Danny Luu (of the London massive) has decided that after I nicknamed him ‘Fanny Poo’ I should be crowned Miss Spurt… he obviously has no supporting evidence but it is pretty cringe worthy!!!!
You’ve claimed some major scalps in the last 12 months including Convergence & Riot! and your Hardware Residency. Which of the big guns is next on your wish list?
To be honest there are so many fantastic promotions out there that I would love to play… I’m starting to branch outside of London so one of those big outdoor festivals would just be amazing, all in due time though - I’m just loving what I am doing and the opportunities and support that I have been getting.
Hard House Academy is going to be the showboat for Frantic’s 7th Birthday celebrations. You’ve got quite a few under your belt now. Do you enjoy these big scale events?
Yeah I do love the big events… firstly because I used to go to them as a clubber and was so inspired - the atmosphere is second to none and everyone is hell bent on ensuring the night is one to remember. Secondly there is so much effort that is put in; not only by the promoters in the production and DJ line-ups, but it seems that all those ‘hermits’ who don’t come out too often seem to proceed out of the wood work for that one night!!
And of course you’re going to be debuting in the awesome 3000+ capacity Main Arena! Will this be the biggest arena you’ve played and are as stupid a question as it is – are you looking forward to it?!
This will be the biggest event I have played… to be perfectly honest I am tres nervous but really looking forward to it!!! I have been given this fantastic opportunity so it will definitely be one to remember! Playing first set in a big room also means I have the opportunity to play something a little different so that will be a nice challenge!!! See you all down the front…
Thanks to Donna for her time!

HARDHOUSE ACADEMY
FRANTIC’S 7th BIRTHDAY
28th August 2004
20.30 – 06.00
211 Stockwell Rd, Brixton, SW9 9SL
London: prepare yourself for the ultimate Hard Dance extravaganza!
From The Scala in London to Code in Tokyo.
From the Birmingham NEC to Durban’s Club 3-30.
From the Sanctuary in Milton Keynes to Gas in Sydney.
Frantic have been providing the Hard Dance World with their weekend manoeuvres for 7 blistering years!
Now finally after a staggering 550 events spread across 9 countries and 5 continents, using over 30 of the worlds leading venues and every single major Hard Dance artist that walks the globe, Frantic is coming home.
We present to you our 7th Birthday celebrations at our flagship event.
HardHouse Academy.
For the birthday celebrations we have once again gone to extraordinary lengths to bring to you an unparalleled visual and aural feast! From the jaw-dropping production of the main room to the intense ferocity of the foyer – this will be like no birthday party you have ever seen!
Once again we have commissioned no less than 4 of the UKs brightest and most innovative production companies to equip the Academy! If your thought the light show in February was sensational then prepare to be blown out of your dancing shoes! London Hard Dance will never, never have seen anything like this before!
We will be shaking the Academy up and reviving some of its lost secrets – the blissed out, laid back grooves of the Funky Arena will be moved, lock-stock and barrel to the Corridor and in its place will be a star studded array of Hard Dance stars from Guffy to Cally & Juice to a thrilling 2nd set by none other than Andy Whitby!
All this and more will mean that the HHA Birthday celebrations will be the perfect start to your perfect bank holiday weekend!
Be there.
