BASIC@Heaven 20th May Preview: The History of BASIC

In just a short time, BASIC has achieved an incredible amount. Emerging from the underground scene almost instantly, BASIC has gone from running small scale parties at Colts to putting on nights at one of the biggest and most respected venues in London, Heaven. As BASIC gears up to play host to Kutski & Steve Blake on the 20th May, I felt it was time we got inside the psyche of the party by interviewing its creator: Nick Basic, aka Wiggii, and seeing his plans for the future as well as the lowdown on the residents, which now include the mighty James Lawson.
For those unaware of BASIC, describe who runs the show behind the scenes and who is responsible for running the party.
There are a few people who help to keep BASIC running and progressing smoothly. First of all, I run the show and oversee all the goings on behind the scenes such as the line-ups, the PR and marketing, production, dealing with the DJ agencies etc, and I am also responsible for running the party on the night. My business partner, Dean (Roffie) also helps oversee things but more on the design front, i.e designing all our marketing material, making sure these get to the printers on time, working on our new website (which should be up soon) and also watching over things on the event nights when I am busy or playing my set. Then there is my wife Emma who deals with a lot of the admin side of things such as making sure all the websites have our events added to their "What's On Guides", sending out all the booking confirmations and also keeps an eye on things on the night. Last but by no means least, we have a very dedicated team that help run things on the night such as the ticket office, guest lists, flyering and making sure that all of you lot are happy and enjoying yourselves.
Describe what BASIC is all about and why you think this is different from the other promotions out there.
BASIC started out as an intimate event aimed at the trance side of dance music and we aim to keep the genres between euphoric, tech and hard, yet uplifting, trance. We pride ourselves on our line-ups and the steady progression of the music, as I think this is one of the most important factors in a promotion. At the moment, there are far too many events out there that have a warm up DJ banging out tunes at 145bpm + and I think this is kind of ruins the night!
In a short time, BASIC has come from performing reasonably small scale parties at Corts to performing bi-monthly at Heaven, one of London's most respected venues. How did the link with Heaven arise?
I had been looking into changing venues for a while as we pretty much out grew Corts in two or so events and needed more space to accomodate the masses, so I was scouting around for a venue that was big enough to see us grow steadily and have reserved space in case we needed. After my initial meeting with the management at Heaven, I was offered The Sound Shaft, but was very reluctant to take this as it did not have the atmosphere and charisma we were looking for and did not really offer that much more space than Corts. After a few more meetings, it was agreed that we use the two upstairs rooms, Star and Dakota Bar, and if we needed more space we could move into the main room if it was available, so there you have it!
Did you ever anticipate that BASIC would grow in this manner?
I did expect BASIC to grow, but steadily over time and not as rapidly as it has. This I think is partly due to the need, by clubbers, for new promotions that offer something fresh and unique, something that seperates them from all the other parties out there such as our caring attitude and putting the clubber first instead of just wanting to fill our coffers... and of course a lot of hard work by the BASIC crew.
You've adopted new residents on the way including most recently James Lawson. How did James come to be involved with BASIC?
With BASIC growing at the rate it was, I needed to bring in an artist with fresh ideas and styles and also one that had been around for a while but not too long. As I have always been a big supporter of James's music, mixing skills and the connection he has with his audiences he was the prime candidate and after a little negotiating with his agency, Most Wanted Global, we secured him as our third and final resident.
Your other major headline resident, El Greko, is another rising starlet on the circuit, combining a manner of tricks with great stage presence. How did you come to notice El Greko and what do you see for him in the future?
It all started way back with the Frantic & HarderFaster DJ competition. El Greko won the competition and I saw him play for the first time on main stage for Frantic at Camden Palace shortly after and what a performance! I approached him and asked him a play at the very first BASIC and once again his mixing skills, scratching and the way he could get the crowd moving with just two tunes amazed me and I offering him a residency on the spot! I think give him another year or so and the right representation, agency wise, a lot of hard work and we could see him gracing the stages of the bigger events such as PolySexual or Crasher with main stage appearances!
You also DJ yourself under the name WIggii, soon to become "Nick BASIC". As a DJ, what would be your ideal gig?
My ideal gig would be playing to a good sized, up for it crowd at a big outdoor event, preferably on a beach and dropping something like Binary Finary or K5 as the sun came up over the water and let's not forget smiles on everyone's faces. 
You also play at every BASIC gig, bringing to the mix a strong selection of upbeat hard trance. Do you feel this sound is working better than harder house at the moment?
I feel that the hard trance sound is working well at the moment and will always give hard house a run for it's money. There are a few labels out there that are pushing more hard trance onto the market and don't look like they are going to let up anytime soon.
Similarly, BASIC is primarily a trancier party. Do you feel this sound has more potential for promotions at the moment?
Yes, definately. I think more promotions are looking at trance to revive the scene as hard house has become some what static at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my hard house but think that trance parties are on their way back in and will be around for a long time to come.
As BASIC continues to grow over 2005 you've featured some of the biggest DJ names on the London circuit including Jon Doe, James Lawson, Steve Blake and, at the next party on the 20th May, Kutski. Can you reveal any other DJs who you have booked for future parties?
Let just say we have secured some very big names that are in the Mixmag top 100 and have a few surprises in store for our first birthday on July 8th and indeed for the rest of the year.
You also plan in the future to expand into DJ management. What can you tell us about how this will be organized?
I can't go into great detail with this at the moment as we are still working hard to lauch the agency in the next few months, but what I can say is that we will be taking on some of the UK's freshest and most talented artists and will be working hard to keep the scene fresh and exciting. Watch this space...
You have 10 words in which to make clubbers come to BASIC on the 20th May. What would you say to them?
World class venue, no politics, friendly, top Friday night, KUTSKI & STEVE BLAKE... you would be insane to miss this!!
Few more than 10, but we'll let you off Anything else you would like to tell us about the party?
BASIC's last event at Heaven for 2005 will be on May 20th and then we will be
moving to London's most sort after dance venue... The Fridge... as from July 8th for our 1st birthday and then will resume in September as a monthly event for the rest of the year on the second Friday of each month!! Details to be released shortly...
