Australia’s Number One Female Hard Dance Dj Gets Ready To Rock Tasty To Its Foundations!

Reported by Billy Daniel Bunter / Submitted 08-06-05 22:36

As one of the hottest of nu-breed djs to explode onto the circuit, over the past few years Chia has secured her place as a major player in the Australian hard dance scene. This young DJ's sheer determination and perseverance, coupled with her passion for dance music, has led Chia to develop a strong following throughout Australia. It's turned her into the exciting performer she is today, delivering her trademark sounds to dance floors across the country.

Mid 2004 saw Chia's first production release on UK underground dance label X-ITE. The track, 'Turned to Dust', a collaboration with DJ Yoshi, received plays from some of UK's most influential names including Billy Daniel Bunter, Brisk, Tidy Boys and Lisa Lashes. The release also featured a remix from UK DJ/producer Roosta. 2005 is already looking bright with more releases and several productions under way, including collaborations with international and Australian producers.

No stranger to performing, Chia held her first club residencies in her hometown Brisbane at just 18 years of age. She has spent the past 4 years honing her skills whilst performing at major clubs and festivals around the nation. Her talent was so evident that in late 2003 she was invited to move to Sydney to take up a residency at Australia's number one hard dance Saturday night – Progress @ GAS Nightclub.

Currently Chia performs weekly in Sydney at Gas Nightclub and Daydreams Day club. She is frequently billed for major dance parties around Australia and New Zealand, gracing the decks at the likes of Frantic, Slinky, Advent*jah, System 6, Hyperspeed, Helter Skelter, Mayhem, Endorphin, Atomic NRG and Global Panic.

Familiar with the club circuit, Chia has performed around the nation at major clubs in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Coffs Harbour.

Chia has played alongside many international artists including Marco V, Kai Tracid, K90, Pulser, Nick Sentience, Lab 4, Ed Real, Billy Daniel Bunter, Alphazone, Dave Lee, Anne Savage, Kevin Energy, Stimulant DJs / Brisk, Vinylgroover, Captain Tinrib, Dave Randall, Nick Rafferty and DJ Wag to name a few.

Australia's foremost lady of UK hard dance, and headed for huge success - Chia is being hailed as one of the nation's most exciting young DJ's.

How long have you been a dj, and what was your original inspiration?

I’m basically the loyal dance floor fanatic turned DJ. I’ve been playing out for around 5 years.

When did the hard dance scene 1st start kicking off in Oz?

The hard dance scene was alive and kicking in Oz well before I was old enough to go clubbing so I couldn’t really tell you.

What is the hard dance scene like in Australia at the moment?

The hard dance scene in Australia is going strong. Each city has its own sound that it tends to favour, Sydney crowds love their uplifting and hard trance, Melbourne likes hard techno, hardcore is big in Brisbane, giving a good variety of sounds throughout the country.

Many Australians come to the UK and discover dance music for the very 1st time, but there has always been a vibrant dance culture in Oz. Why do you think many Australians don’t discover the culture until they reach the UK?

I think the dance scene here in the UK is somewhat more accepted by the general public, or simply the weather is so nice in Australia that people tend to find other interests and only spend a small amount of their life clubbing.

You are resident dj @ Sydney’s Gas Club every weekend; describe the vibe and the music policy of Sydney’s number one hard dance night out.

Gas is absolutely wicked, I’m lucky to have a residency at my favourite club and look forward to every weekend there!!! The lighting and production are second to none, with full laser shows and kick ass EV sound system (plus one of the best lighting operators in the country!). The crowd are heaps up for it every weekend and the list of the world’s top artists that have graced the decks at Gas is too long to go into!

What releases have you had out so far, and what can we expect from you in the near future on the production tip, I also hear you are in the studio whilst here, who are you working with?

I had my first release last year on X-ITE, a collaboration with DJ Yoshi called ‘Turn to Dust’ with Roosta on the remix duties. I’ve had another tune ‘Nemesis’, collaboration between myself and Brad Aspin just recently signed to Enigma here in Australia and will be featured on the next Enigma compilation. Other than that I’m in the studio whilst out here with K Complex (who’s an absolute genius) working on some new material so watch this space!!!

Describe your music style.

I play a few different styles depending on the club I’m playing and what timeslot. My style pretty much covers anything from German hard trance (not hardstyle) to uplifting trance and UK hard dance.

What have you heard about Tasty and what will you bring to the atmosphere on Saturday night?

I’ve heard that Tasty is absolutely crazy, lots of crazy people and wicked music and I saw the venue, The Mass, last week and it looks amazing so I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll be taking my dancing shoes on the night and hitting the dance floor as well as providing a wicked roof raising set, if you’re not there you’ll miss out…!

You play alongside the worlds leading dj’s on a regular basis back home, who have you recently played along side, and what dj’s have inspired you the most with their style?

Off the top of my head, this year alone at Gas I’ve played alongside the likes of James Lawson, K90, Dave Randall, Alphazone, Steve Hill, Technikal, Tara Reynolds, Alex Kidd…. The guys who’ve most inspired me and I admire would have to be James Lawson, Nick Sentience, Kevin Energy, Phil Reynolds, Scott Brown, BK and of course Billy Daniel Bunter who’s been absolutely fantastic and totally supportive ever since we first met.

From what you have experienced of the British scene so far, how does it differ from what is happening in Oz?

I went to 2 separate events last weekend and both were fantastic. There isn’t too much difference really when it comes to the actual club nights or parties, the biggest difference is that the line ups here seem massive as all these established names are local so on any weekend here you can find a line up that in Australia you would only find at a big festival.

What other gigs do you have whilst you are here?

Wednesday 8th June I’m playing at Warped @ The Spotted Dog and of course Tasty on Saturday night.

Also a couple of radio shows, last Sunday I did a show on www.newtechpirates.com with Nicki S and Donna Birt and this Thursday night will be on www.harddance.net with Mark Ashley.

Where do you think the hard dance scene is going?

I don’t really think about it much to be honest, just enjoy it for what it is now. I guess you guys here have had a big techno influence in hard dance, which didn’t quite take off in Australia. A couple of the UK guys have played a bit of psy-trance during their sets downunder recently which went down quite well so I can see that sound perhaps getting a bit more play within the hard dance scene in Oz in the near future.

What are your current top 5 tunes, and your top 5 of all time?

Current Top 5:
1. Justin Fry – Free Your Mind
2. Sol Ray vs Ben Eye & Log One – Evolution of the Mind
3. Emotion Is Chaos – Technikal and Kiotic
4. Edison Factor – Nervous Breakdown (Olly Perris Rmx)
5. Salva Mea – Matt Williams and Phil Reynolds

All time Top 5:
1. Boccacio Life – The Secret Wish
2. Edison Factor – Nervous Breakdown
3. James Lawson – Energise
4. Parker & Clind – Generator
5. Commander Tom – Are Am Eye

Any funny stories to tell us?

Yeah plenty but they’re a bit incriminating to many of you crazy people who come and tour Australia every year so I’ll refrain…!
