Anjunabeats Vol III launch party... reviewed Reported by josie / Submitted 07-07-05 14:11 For the launch party of their third album, Anjunabeats assembled the type of line-up that can only come about when a world-class label gets behind an event — Above & Beyond, Smith & Pledger, Matt Hardwick, Super8, Aalto, Andy Bagguley and Marc West. A night pretty heavily concentrated around the melodic, prog trance sound championed by Anjuanbeats, the event was held in collaboration with long established, popular Midlands night Passion, at The Emporium, a full-on club nestled incongruously among the Spars and bingo halls of a very… very small town. It was attended by a fiercely loyal crowd, right down to logos tattooed on their arms, and even an eerie Mark Pledger look-alike in matching yellow Anjunabeats t-shirt. Resident Marc West opened for the home side, with a gentle, prog-hued warm up set. Things picked up and got a lot chunkier with a really lovely Interstate — ‘I Found You’ remix. The crowd were a bit thin on the ground at such an early stage but very good-natured. Also nice from Marc was the dramatic, sexy ‘I Need You’ from Jose Amnesia vs Fedo. Super8 was up next, aka Miika Eloranta or Elo, who eased the crowd along with a slow start and some long breakdowns so as not to force the hand of the bigger names coming after him. Couple of album tracks got played — ‘Larry Mountains 54’ from David West feat Andreas Hermansson, and Carrie Skipper — 'Time Goes By'. Everything came together with Mirco de Govia’s epic tune ‘Voller Sterne’. Seriously, the glorious, exhilarating swell of this is like mountains forming or something. The on dit is that this track just won’t lie down and grow old gracefully — it just keeps coming back, and no less than Ferry Corsten himself is playing it at the moment. Elo is good at dropping peak time trance like this, and I’m making it my mission to get this man a set in London so you can all see how ace he is as well. Smith and Pledger then thankfully steered clear of prog house, and dished out a nice set of prog and quite tribal trance. Big tunes were Oliver Shine — ‘Northstar’, their own new track ‘Northern Lights’, and the fabulous ‘Love Theme Dusk’ from Signalrunners vs Mike Foyle, just a brilliant, beautiful, otherwordly track. Label bosses Above & Beyond then took over the decks, kicking off with Yilmaz Altanhan’s catchy, intense prog track ‘Eighties’. The boys in fact rocked the place, right from the start, and ending up at times really quite pounding, much more so than the tracks they produce themselves or release on the label. Some absolute classics got an airing as well — the simple, powerful ‘No One On Earth’, Delerium’s ‘Silence’, and best of all ‘Satellite’. Oceanlab, who wrote this track, are in fact Above & Beyond with Justine Suissa on vocals, and there was some serious craziness during this track, both inside and outside the DJ box. Sets like this show why Above & Beyond have earned their stripes as DJs as well as producers. They were followed by a short live set from Aalto — aka Paavo (of Above & Beyond) and Elo. Their last tune dropped was the Aalto classic ‘Taurine’, which had the crowd bouncing around in glee. Last of the guests was London trance DJ Matt Hardwick, who for me has pretty much cornered the market in the big, emotional sound. Excellent track choice from Matt, including Inertia — ‘The Chamber’, which I am hearing everywhere and loving, his own 2004 euphoric blinder ‘Connected’ (a collaboration with Smith & Pledger), and the heartstoppingly brilliant ‘Without You’ from Dogzilla, aka Simon Patterson. The night pretty much mirrored the album with laidback and prog early on, and then bigger, more driving tracks later on. A lot of the album tracks, which sound a bit civilised in the comfort of your living room, actually sound a lot better played loud on a big club rig, and I think that’s the secret really. One minor gripe lads — you only get away with cutting the music to hear the crowd singing once in a night. Apart from that… everyone, including me, had a lot of fun. The atmosphere was faultlessly friendly, and the night trouble-free. It’s a bloody long way up north, but it ain’t grim. Photos courtesy of Anjunabeats and Passion archives. Saw him at the Turnmills launch party and has was fantastic. Shame I missed him here.
