Bristol based Deepgroove AKA Grayson Shipley & Lee Pattison are famed party nutters, in fact it was this nutter sensibility that brought these two fun loving types together. Having both successfully mastered Bristol clubland and the after-hours scene, Deepgroove was born. Their 4 decks and FX show though (not to mention their ability to party hard) sets this DJ/ production duo miles apart from the pack. HF caught up with the pair as they prepared for their Riot! debut.
HF: So Deepgroove, give us an insight into the concept behind the production duo?
After a long night out, we are always desperate to get back in the studio and recreate some of the vibes of the evening. Normally this involves lots of squelchy fat basslines, lots of acid, and dirty beats. Also, to help establish our Deepgroove sound we like making re-edits, working on our own tracks and remixes.
We could only find about 15 records a month that were strong enough to consistently whip up crowds, even in really flat clubs and we didn’t want to resort to naffness so we started making them. After a while we got ok at it.
HF: Your PLAY event in Bristol is the stuff of local legend and your anything goes attitude to throwing parties has seen you throw some random events… what’s the most bizarre event you’ve thrown?
One of our first parties at Lakota with X-Press2 and the tiny bike challenge: races around the club on children’s scooters in pyjamas, and then an after party til midday — a 14 hr marathon, and then a Charity Shop Challenge where we had 30 people spending a pound each to see who could get the best costume to wear for the rest of the day.
HF: How has becoming Mixmag Future Heroes helped your career so far?
It’s a good benchmark, and a great addition to our armoury.
HF: You’ve been getting some quality remix work lately, what else production-wise have you got in the pipeline?
We’re currently embracing all things acid house and learning a whole new production ethos that doesn’t rely on massive driving drums. We have just finished remixes for Underwater, Hope and DJ Hyper, UMM, Whoop!, and are working on stuff for Loaded, M2S, Debunk and a few others. On the track front we have stuff coming out on Toolroom, Onephatdeeva, UMM, Slave and will be launching a label very soon.
HF: Do you pre plan your sets or if not, what happens when one of you drops a blatant stinker of a tune mid set?
We don’t pre-plan, but we have meetings where we play each other records and decide whether they are good enough and we’ll always both agree on which tune goes next before it hits the platter, we only squabble about haircuts and sharing cookies!
HF: Have you ever got in a fight behind the decks?
We are very much like a married couple and there may have been some incidents involving a few cans of wifebeater and who is going to wear the gold shimmery dress…
HF: You’ve got your Riot! debut this month; do you have any tricks up your sleeves for this event?
We’ll spend a couple of days in the studio making some cheeky little bootlegs, it’s great to drop big tunes but then have twisted them up for extra rocket power. We’re also always making extra acappella tracks as we like to have a constant flow of fresh stuff.
HF: And finally, what’s next for Deepgroove?
Bigger and bigger singles, working towards an album; we’re just starting to get to grips with songs through remixing, so once we feel we have got a handle on it Lee is our little songbird.
Catch Deepgroove @ Riot on Sunday 25th September at The End in London.
After our rammed return to The End, we our proud to deliver the next installment in our quest to bring the best hard dance and tough dirty funk to London.
Our first-rate residents are joined at the helm by 20 year-old psy-hard dance pioneer Eskimo who will be showcasing tracks from his forthcoming triple album project alongside Belgium pioneer Yves Deruyter who delivered his anthem 'Calling Earth' in 1994 and re-shaped the European tech-trance sound. This track is still played by the likes of Ed Real and BK at Riot! and beyond and we are proud to have him grace our turntables for his first UK appearence in years.
Rising dirty housers Deepgroove have recorded and remixed for Junior Boys Own and UMM Records and are tipped for the top by Mixmag. Prepare to be dazzled!
