Interview with the one-and-only Rob Tissera

There are only a few things that are certain in club world. One is that at some point you know you’re going to lose your phone, keys, wallet, coat room ticket or plot, and another is that if Rob Tissera is in charge of the decks then it’s a dead cert that the dancefloor will be packed.
Even the most ardent critics who profess to not being a Tissera fan have been found in the middle of the dancefloor, making some serious shapes. His sets are drenched in so much enthusiasm and vitality that it takes a great deal of will power not to smile, or wiggle those hips. It’s because of this Tiss-factor that he’s one of the most in-demand djs on the circuit. Without him the hard dance scene would be a lot less fun.

Clubbers and industry alike love his trademark balance of euphoric hard trancers juxtaposed with some really filthy hard dance tracks, which are then overlaid and cut-up with acapellas, samples and re-edits to produce the distinctive Bobby Tee sound.
He’s also an incredible producer. This year he’s released his Quake anthem ‘The Day Will Come’ and his collaboration with Vinylgroover and The Red Hed, ‘Beautiful Like You’, which always has the dance floor leaping to its feet.
What is so refreshing is that his passion for what he is doing is just as strong as it aways has been since he began his career playing at warehouse raves and the legendary Hacienda 15 years ago.
An unashamed workaholic, if he’s not in his studio, catching planes or driving hundred of miles up and down the motorway, he’s busy co-promoting and playing the incredibly successful upfront house night in Leeds, Kissdafunk. The party is only 20 months old, but in that time it’s made its mark as one of the biggest house nights in the UK, has been to Ibiza, Leeds Love Parade, toured the UK, is regularly mentioned on Radio One and is about to launch a monthly party on Saturday 1 October in Newcastle. He’s certainly a busy bee, but I managed to pin-him down just long enough for him to answer a few questions about his new single and his current projects.

You’ve had a pretty hectic summer. You’ve being playing in Ibiza lots, had gigs up and down the country, played at every massive festival and found time to run your house night [b]Kissdafunk. What’s has been your favourite gig this summer.
Am I allowed to say I enjoyed them all? The standout hard event was the Tidy Summer Camp although Global and Cream were also spectacular. Our Kissdafunk in Leeds with David Guetta on August Bank Holiday was also awesome!
Do you ever get a chance to take a break?
I’m an unashamed workaholic. I moan sometimes but the truth is I love my work and that makes it all ok.
You’ve been teasing people for quite a while, but at long last you’ve released ‘Beautiful (Like You)’ which you produced with Vinylgroover and The Red Hed. How did you come up with the idea for it?
It was a track that VinyGroover and The Red Hed had half finished months earlier and I just came along and said let's use these bits and lose those bits and away we went. We wrote it in a day and then revisited it a couple of times via email and post until we came up with two definitive versions. I really love it and so do the audience, which is a massive buzz for the three of us. They are extremely talented boys.
You’ve been in Ibiza quite a bit this year both at Extreme Euphoria vs Tidy and with Kissdafunk. How have you found the island this year?
I’ve had a great time and it annoys me when people moan that it’s “not as good as it used to be”. Tidy Euphoria Euphoria was ridiculously good for me and I've met some great new friends which is always wicked. It’s the best island for fun on the planet. Embrace it while it lasts.
Over the summer you’re also just re-released your Quake classic ‘The Day Will Come’ which also featured on the Gatecrasher Classics album. It must be quite special to have your tune released on that album?
Sure it’s a real honour. The track is one of my favourite things that I've ever been involved in. I’m now looking forward to moving on from that track and writing a few other belters!
Have you got any other productions on the horizon this year?
I sure have. I’ve just finished a track with Guyver which is easily as strong as ‘Feel The Drums’ and I’m in the studio with Paul Maddox completing some hard riff driven monsters which should be ready in time for TW8. I’m also writing some house stuff with Ian from Quake who is a genius.

You’ve also just hosted a on-off show on Galaxy talking about your career and about the history of dance music, but lots of people probably don’t know that you used to present your own show on Galaxy. Was this something that you enjoyed doing and would consider doing again?
I love the radio and I’d be right up for doing a bit more of course.
Is it true that you are pretty strong Luton Town supporter?
They are my boys and I love them. They’re flying at the mo 4th in the championship after years in the doldrums. I’m a footy fanatic. I used to play semi-pro till house music was born and all that.
You always look like you’re having such as great time when you’re DJing. Do you ever secretly get a little sick of it and wish you could be at home watching TV, or are you just a workaholic?
I fucking love it. How can you do anything other than smile when people are so happy to see you??
Your house night Kissdafunk also seems to be going from strength to strength and has even got an Essential Mix earmarked for October. Is this true?
Yes it is true. We’re really excited. It’s on Oct 28th. The Trophy Twins will be recorded from the club and I’ll also be playing along with Shapeshifters and our awesome residents. It’ll be a roadblock as always.
I also hear it’s been nominated for a House Music Award? What the secret to running a successful promotion?
Myself and my business partner Tolley are working day and night to make it one of the leading nights in the land. We’re are getting there at a frighteningly quick pace. So many more people like house as well as hard stuff and that’s where we come into our own, as our crowd is extremely open minded and you may see them at Goodgreef one night and then at Kissdafunk the next. It’s so nice to see that people are removing the blinkers and realising there is a whole load of great music out there.
