She’s baaaack! And ready to party… Too Much Maria returns to London for another round!

Clubland is a funny place: the so-called ‘scene’ as we know it is constantly growing and mutating, evolving and changing, so you never know who’s going to be the next big thing or who’s going to suddenly decide to put their dancing shoes under the bed, never to be allowed out again for another night on the tiles. There has been one constant at most London hard dance parties over the last couple of years though, and that’s the legend that is Too Much Maria. Surely one of clubland’s most colourful characters, if she’s not working the door with her guest list at any given party then she’s usually found right at the front, showing her glamorously international crowd how to give it loads.
But for six months of 2005 there was someone missing from that spot right in front of the dj and club queues were more chaotic than ever. Had she finally had enough of London and retired back home to Brazil? It was starting to look suspiciously like it.
Fortunately good things mature and improve with age and the luckiest of us just keep getting more powerful. Maria is indeed one of the lucky ones, for it appears her energy knows no boundaries. Not only is she back in London for the long haul, but she’s determined to make the most of it. It’s been exactly a year since we last managed to keep Maria still long enough to answer a few questions, and in that time a lot has happened... Upfront’s Sol Ray gets the goss on the Mama of London parties.
Your birthday is coming soon and you are having a party at what was The Chunnel club (or Studio 33) in Vauxhall What are your plans for the night?
My 40th birthday was on October 11th and I’ve been celebrating it since the Heat 4th birthday and then at Riot!, Timeless, at Astrix & Friends, at Polysexual, at Byte @ the Purple Turtle and finally at a special celebration this Sunday 23rd at London’s sensational new club Hidden formerly Studio 33 from 2pm to 10pm. It will be a killer! I’ve got some wicked surprises and hope people can make it after HHA and all the parties and after parties around.
I’ve got some good supporters and need to send my love to Anthony Dean, Little Gem, Kristian, Simo, Eduardo Herrera, Ed Real, The Ting, Cally Gace, Billy Daniel Bunter, Roosta, all the djs in the My Crowd room and the guys whose been supporting me a long time: Fabio, Tasty Kev, Dj Keen, Briza, Venta, Paolo Lopes, Joao Caballeiro, Rodrigo, Ludgero, Stefan, Dani D. Glad to have you Sol Ray on the line up as well playing techno (I LOVE TECHNO). Thank you for your support.
I need to say thanks as well to Will from Frantic, Enrico from Antiworld, HeatUK Damian/Anton/Pat, Twisted Hannah, HarderFaster, dontstayin, and harddancelondon for all the amazing support.
Have you made a pact with the devil? Because you sure don’t look your age...! Can you tell us how we can get in touch with him or what your secret of eternal youth is?!
Very funny! Even I cannot believe my age. I used to ask my Mum if she is really sure about my age. And don’t forget that I’ve even got a son wwhose 14 years old. People never give me more than 30 years old. Maybe because I started going clubbing when I was 35 and always take it easy with drugs, alcohol and I just gave up smoking flags after doing acupuncture a few months ago in Brazil. I’m feeling like the world’s greatest 40 year old because the saying is very true, that at 40 life’s just begun. Let’s believe it!
You have lots of different djs playing many styles of music in the two rooms — trance, techno, psy. Is this because it’s your birthday so you’ll have whatever you like... or do you feel more club nights could be this way?
I’m very opened mind and really love all the styles and as it’s my birthday party I want to show my taste to my crowd. Some parties like Riot! have been mixing the styles and I really love it. The main room djs will play uplifting trance, trance, hard trance, hard house, techno and psy and the second room upcoming djs will play the same styles plus some funky house, electro and Brazilian beats.
So Maria you are a club night promoter and ticket agent for almost all the hard dance promoters in London. You must eat, drink, sleep, and dream party life!! Can you briefly tell us what your average day is like?
Some people thinking that because I’m working with parties, my life is like a party all the time. But it’s not. I’m working from Monday to Friday in the office in Holborn selling advance tickets and helping the head promoters to promoter their parties at the internet or flyering around and the weekend I’ve got to stay in the clubs to work with guest lists etc. And I like to be around and talk with clubbers and listen to their feedback and complains. I tell the promoters what they say and then we can try to sort things out and make the scene better.
You obviously love clubbing and enjoy bringing people together. When did you realise you wanted to do this and why?
I realise that I was too old to go clubbing every single weekend and started to look around to do something to get some extra money. I was in love with electronic music, as I’d never been to any rave before in Brazil! I met a Brazilian guy named Eddie the Angel at Escape From Samsara at The Fridge and them he introduced me to Mick from Twisted and I started flyering for him to get my free ticket. After that it was easy to meet different people and get in touch with clubbers, especially Brazilians. I started to help Frantic to organize a paying guest list and the rest is all history. I’ll need a full magazine to tell you all the history!
I’ve heard that you are one of the most positive people around when it comes to London’s nightlife but… if you could change anything in clubland what would it be?
Some promoters call me Miss Complaints. (Yes I totally agree! ed.) I’m never 100% happy with clubland. There always will be some complaints. For example, I just hate clubbing in the summer time in London, it’s too hot everywhere and the clubs always put the air conditioning off to sell more drinks. It make people look very bad, ladies cannot keep their makeup on and the bad smells around are terrible! Sorry but I need to say that!
I would love to change another thing. Better toilets and with a shower. I used to say for some people that they should have a shower, wash their clothes and put some deodorant on before the party. Some of them just arrived at the party smelling bad already. imagine at 3am…
My dream production PRE party is to have Kliton (my hairdresser) doing the hair cut and style and other people doing nails, make up, dressing up with a very nice shower first. Well we need to dream and in London and in the club, everything is possible (it reminds me of a track)!
You’re from Brazil and have just returned from a holiday there. What’s it like out there, are there hard dance clubs, crowds, and parties or is the club scene like here full of different styles. What do you think of the Brazilian club scene?
Brazil is too big and there are so many raves and the atmosphere is amazing. Djs around the globe just love to play out there. I was there from January till July, enough time to go to different raves. They are more into psy trance, techno, progressive and house music. There are no hard dance clubs at all.
Last week was bank holiday in Brazil (Oct 11th) and Nick Sentience and Nicky S played at Evoxx Electronic Party People in Sao Paulo for the first time ever. The promoters are my friends and I’ve been working with them and some promoters from Rio, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and others as well to bring some names from UK and around the globe to play down there. I’ve been in touch with the agencies here to bring some hard dance djs to play out there in the summer time, especially in Rio de Janeiro. If you are a dj agency and want to get in touch with the Brazilians, please do not hesitate to contact me.
What keeps bringing you back to the UK? Is it our wonderful weather, gorgeous blokes/babes or the fish and chips?
Actually believe it or not I love the winter time in UK and the babes/blokes too of course. I think I’ve eaten fish and chips only twice. I just opened my company: Never Enough Events and I’ve got some projects and must stay here for a while. I love the UK because from here you can go everywhere around the world. Brazil for me is going to be only for my holidays and also my business with electronic music.
What do you like to do outside of clubbing, do you have any secret hobbies, collections, Brazilian jungle pets?
Brazilian jungle pets, hahaha. Do you want to meet my favourite crocodile? Actually, I’m always very busy with the parties and never find time to have any hobbies. Collections? Only flyers with my name, Upfront magazines, and bills. Too much but never enough bills.
You have a family in Brazil and must miss them very much. With so many of the people on your party email list from other countries do you think this is something that ties you all together, a common bond?
I’m planning to bring my son with his grandmother to live around London, not in London because it’s just to busy and expensive and I want my son at school all the time learning English and the culture. I hope I can do it in the next 2 years. He is studying English and almost finished his first level at the school there, so I hope he can start the second level in the UK.
I’ve been living in London for about 6 years now and met so many people from all around the world. Even people from Transylvania and they are lovely, I haven’t found Dracula yet! I think at the parties people can just forget for a while how far their families are and trying to be happy and enjoy their time as much as they can. It’s a shame some people doesn’t know how to really enjoy this freedom.
What kind of things inspire you, do you have any heros/heroines?
There aren’t one particular people who inspired me. God is my hero and I’m my heroine! I admire lots of different people for different reasons. At the moment I’m learning how to do meditation. The results are brilliant and it inspires me to continue on this hard life.
What are your favourite things? (see below!)
Food?
Any seafood.
Movie?
Dirty Dancing
Filmstar?
Too many!
TV Soap?
EastEnders, The Bill (I love to listen to proper English and learn some slang!).
Thing to do?
I start boxing next week, have more sessions of acupuncture and want to sort out my website www.neverenough.com coming soon.
Thanks to Crimson - Crazy Fool, Daf, Eduardo, Joeyxx and Kiko for their photos and artwork.
