Anne Savage interviews the Lab4 boys

Reported by Anne Savage / Submitted 21-12-05 18:35

I don’t know about you but I love everything about Christmas; and I can’t wait to get down to Extreme Euphoria at The Fridge on Boxing Day to share some of the festive spirit with my dj pals. Last year’s was brilliant. The place was absolutely packed with an up-for-it crowd full of the festive spirit giving it one of those special “I was there when” atmospheres which don’t come along very often: but when you do you remember for a very long time. This year the music will be hard dance classics all night long which I’m really looking forward to. So much so in fact that as a pre-Christmas taster I had a sneaky catch up with the Lab 4 boys to see what they will be getting up to this Christmas.

So guys what do you want for Christmas this year?

Lez: Well I’ve bought myself an M-Audio Microtracker. It’s a 24 bit palm size digital recorder. You can go around recording everything. Being 24 bit as well means it’s as clear as. Best thing to do I always find is to buy yourself something you want then extort the money out of your nearest and dearest. Otherwise you get stuck with some shite present that you’ll put on Ebay by March.

Adam: A new motorbike..... I think I’ll be disappointed though!

What will you be buying each other?

Lez: I’ve bought Adam The Pink Panther DVD box set. He doesn’t know yet. He's been going on about it forever now.

Adam: Betty Ford Clinic vouchers.

You’re playing for Extreme Euphoria’s Christmas Cracker. What’s the most extreme thing you’ve ever done?

Lez: Fell into an open crypt when I was about 12 and couldn’t get out. It was like a nightmare come true. It stank of damp and god knows what else. Eventually when my eyes became used to the dim light I could make out where to step to climb out. I had nightmares for ages afterwards.

Adam: Probably setting my self on fire when I was a kid and thought I had a future as a stunt man.

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Where and when do you normally do it?

Lez: All shopping is done online. I have zero tolerance for crowds and that kind of trauma. There’s no need.

Adam: Yes.... thank god for the internet.... but damn Royal Mail!

Where else will you be playing over the festive season. Will you have chance to catch up with your friends and family?

Lez: We’re playing on the 23rd, 26th, New Year’s Eve and Day. Family stuff is between 9 am to 6pm Christmas Day. After that it’s severe vodka and drug abuse... oh yes!.

Adam: Slinky in Bournemouth NYE and Lashed at Air on NYD. Should see some of my family Christmas day.

What projects are you working on at the moment? Have you got any more tracks for adverts or soundtracks in the pipeline?

Lez: Working on some rap metal tracks along the Lab4 — Extreme Live mold.

Adam: The next Lab4 album has really been taking up most of our time recently, which is now to be released on Resist on 20th Feb.

Have you played on a Boxing Day before? Is it different to play around Christmas?

Lez: Yeah quite a few times actually. It’s usually a good laugh as people are always in the festive spirit and are up for a bit of a shindig.

Adam: We have played Boxing Day once before, also at the Fridge. It was a daytime gig and not much fun as it meant getting up at 5.30 am to be at the Fridge for 8.30am. The gig was OK but it was all pretty tiring.

Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions Lined up for 2006

Lez: I want to get my eyes done. I’m really short sighted and wearing contacts is beginning to really piss me off. I promise myself this every year and never get around to it.... so I reckon this year!!!!.

Adam: Less alcohol.

What have been the highlights for you in 2005 and what's been your tune of the year?

Lez: Getting the album out of the way and getting two record deals for it. Avex for Japan and Resist for here. Really pleased with the latest Lab4 tune, it’s called ‘Nue Messiah’. It’s the new end of set track. Filthy and evil... just how it should be... ha ha!.

Adam: Highlights — Tidy 10th birthday at Magna and Laboratory 3 with Hard House Academy. Tune of the year — Lab4 ‘Anarchy in the UK’.

What are your predictions about how the hard dance scene will go in 2006?

Lez: We’ve heard some really positive things regarding the hard dance scene recently. It’s about time. Let’s face it, it’s been there for a long time now and has never been given the cred it deserves. From what we’ve heard that may just be about to all change...

Adam: I think it’s going to be a big happy lovely year with lots of fun parties.....
With Lab4 playing at loads of them.

Thanks to boys for their time and thanks to UKClubPix (Matt) and Lab4 for pics.

Not really a fan of Lab4. Somewhat put off by their constant "look how crazy we are!!!!!" poses and actions. How old are you ffs? Roll eyes (sarcastic) At least Yoji does "shock value" with some style. Wink
