Reborn: tek trance has a new taktikal hero

The art of reinvention in the music industry is a hard journey to make. For many artists it's a last ditch effort to revive a flagging career, for a gifted few others it's about finding themselves and, like a revelation, discovering the musical path that they probably should have taken in the first place!
Lee Osborne has his sights set firmly on the latter. Starting out in hard dance, the London based artist had never really found that sound that could really define him as a producer and DJ. Although spotted on some of the more high profile clubs line ups and potentially looked like an exciting young DJ, it failed to materialise in his 'former life' and he made the conscious decision to move away from hard dance.
Osborne has woken in his new life and banished the awkward dream to the hard dance wilderness. His rebirth is in its final hour of labour before he emerges as a new musical prodigy. After spending 12 months locked in the Tekelec studio with all manner of tek-trance producers, Lee has now established a sound that is sweeping through his new found genre like the proverbial wild-fire. And it’s not just another dream for him — when you have titans like Carl Cox, John Askew and even Anne Savage battering down your door, hungry for your plate of CDRs — you know it’s all gravy!!!
As the world starts spinning faster and faster for Osborne it is no surprise to see that he has attracted interest from all quarters of the musical world. One of these has been the astute management team at taktikal:AM, who are responsible for the ever increasing profile of artists such as Greg Brookman, Fausto, Wid & Ben and breaks supremo Max Cooper. On the eve of Osborne joining their star-studded list of artists, we managed to put a few questions to him on life in the fast lane:
Lee, life has been moving fairly rapidly for you at the moment: has there been a point where you have wanted to stop the ride as it’s going to fast?
I’m in the studio everyday and it’s taking a lot of hard work and dedication, but it’s worth every single minute. I’m loving it… so yeah I’m enjoying the ride!
Moving away from one genre and into another is never an easy task. Have you found shaking the hard dance gremlins off you back a tough job?
A lot of people did know me for the harder stuff but I did stop playing out so much early last year and was more interested in making music (tek trance). Your right it’s never easy switching genres but I just knew it was right. You have to follow your passion!
You about to sign for the increasingly high-profile taktikal:AM [artist management]. There roster is responsible for some unique artists such as Greg Brookman, Max Cooper, Wid & Ben and the legendary Dutch spinner Fausto. Is this a positive move for you and how did it come about?
When I was asked to join taktikal I was completely over the moon and I must admit it took me by surprise! You see I hadn’t been playing out a lot in London as I had taken a break to concentrate on studio work. The initial interest from taktikal came from the productions I’d been working on with Tekelec. From then on it just snowballed and here I am today.
Taktikal:AM has an eclectic mix of artists on its agency. Are you familiar with any of them and do you have any collaborations planned?
I’ve known Mr Brookman for a few years now, he’s such a down to earth bloke and such a massive talent I'm very proud to be on the roster with him. I’ve not worked with any of them yet but I’m planning to hit the studio with Greg very soon. That’s gonna be very interesting!
We’ve had Max down to play at YES! twice now. This guy’s technical ability just blows me off my feet. Big things from him in the future — this man will go far!
I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of the family.
Historically you’re renowned for playing the harder end of the spectrum but over the past 12 months you’ve removed yourself from that style — how did this come about and what was your decision?
I think your musical horizons broaden throughout your career, I wanted to be more creative with the music I play and produce and it felt like a natural progression for me. I have always been heavily influenced with the European trance sound, but have always appreciated a tekky groove and the tek trance scene at the moment is one of the most exciting genres to be involved in, it’s a real hybrid sound with lots of possibilities.
Who would you say is your biggest personal influence at the moment?
Ali Wilson for me is a very big influence. He’s been my longest standing production partner. We love the same sound and more importantly we love working together, and that’s important when you’re in the studio everyday 5 days a week lol!
What DJs and Producers are really doing it for at the moment and who can you see out of the new generation making it big in 2006?
Producer wise SVD (Sander van Doorn), Marcel Woods and Stoneface & Terminal are the guys really doing it for me at the moment! One person who really sticks out for me and someone who I can definitely see making it big is Ben Gold. He is so musically minded and has such a big talent!
Can you describe your style for those who come to see you play and for those who buy your music…
My style is tough tek trance with an uplifting progression!
You’ve literally been locked away in the studio for 12 months and my spies tell me you have over 30 tracks ready for release — give us the low down — who have you been working with?
I have been working with Ali a lot and we have done some very exciting tracks plus The Electrilogy (Ali Wilson, Lee Osborne & Matt Smallwood) stuff is coming along nicely! I’ve also just finished 2 solo tracks that are getting a shed load of interest from the majors so I’m very excited about the way everything is progressing.
You’ve been getting lots support from major international DJs such as John Askew, Carl Cox and Tom Harding how does this feel to be getting so much recognition at such a young age?
It’s pretty amazing really, one of the highlights of last year has to be seeing Carl Cox playing out two of our tracks at SW4 in front of 20,000 people — I’ve still got the video on my phone the crowd went absolutely crazy! The press reaction to our music has been phenomenal too, with top reviews in Mixmag, DJmag and 5/5 ‘Tune of the Month’ from Tom Harding in IDJ for ‘Lost Souls’. It’s great to be getting that kind of recognition!
Out of all the events you’ve played at what’s your favourite and who would you love to play for in the future?
I think the last New Year’s was one of exciting periods for me, beginning with a warm up set at Heat Brixton Academy then a mainroom set at The Fridge for Totally Twisted — the crowd was amazing, it really took my breath away! For future events I’d have to say Heat as there production is just floorless and they always deliver wherever they hold a party!
You and your partners launched YES! At the start of December 2005 which has become an overnight success. Why do you think this is? And what are the plans for YES! Moving into 2006 and beyond?
To be honest I think the main contributing factor to its success is the team and the vision behind the party. I mean myself, JC, Ali, Matt, MK (Matt Kaycee) and the YES! crew put a lot of effort into it because we truly belief in the idea and offering something different to clubbers.
As for the future we’ve got some seriously big things planned! Watch this space!
What does the future hold for Lee Osborne where do you see yourself in 1 year’s time?
Lots and lots more productions hitting the shelves some exciting stuff from Tekelec and solo work on different labels. I’ve got lots more gigs lined up and YES! is doing very well, so I’m just gonna keep on doing what I’m doing and hope people like it! BOOWAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can catch Lee Osborne for an exclusive Future Classics set for Wildchild’s almighty London Sound System, Friday 10th February at The Royal Halls of Heaven. Osborne will grace the decks to present the best upfront tek trance from around the globe including a world exclusive selection of his own latest productions straight out of the studio!
Forward thinking future progression... the revolution has already begun!
