The Groove Factory crew join forces with Push for a very special Sunday session

Groove Factory has been quietly bubbling away under the surface of London’s house music scene since 2004, providing quality tough, dirty and funked-up house music at various intimate venues across the capital on a regular basis. They consist of promoter/resident DJ types Richard Launch, Rod Towns, CD, Richo and one Phil Reynolds, exploring his love for this side of dance music. The emphasis is on quality, not quantity, with parties taking place every couple of months, so as to keep things fresh and interesting.
Since its inception, Groove Factory has been all over town. From its early days at lesser-known venues like Copyright right through to its massive Christmas party at The Egg, to hosting rooms for the likes of Riot!, Formula, Sundazed and the sadly-deceased Tilt. With Ibiza and some larger-scale events in their sites, they’re certainly not staying put. The next challenge comes this Sunday, when Groove Factory heads down to The Whitehouse in Clapham for a joint party with Push Sunday Sessions, which is always a roadblock. So, CD and Richard Launch — are you ready to party Push style?
So how did you guys all meet?
CD: I met Richard on the dancefloor at The Fridge and we started going clubbing together. My girlfriend knew Phil (Reynolds) and he introduced us to Paul Henry (ex Groove Factory) and he in turn had heard Rod play at the Egg and said we should book him. We got to know him and asked him to join Groove Factory. Richo……ummm well I’m not sure where he came from! I think he just started following us around begging for a gig and we felt sorry for him!
RL: I bumped into CD a few times out clubbing and we worked out we both lived quite close to each other and so started many a weekend spent on the dance floor or the in our lounge partying. We both met Phil and Paul at the same time a year or so later and also started to hang out or go out to the same events. Me and CD had met Richo at a Christmas day house party ages ago and lived to tell the tale, but only just. I met Rod through the DJ collective I had been associated with before setting up Groove Factory.
How were common musical interests established?
RL: We had all seen that there was a gap in the house market for the tough end of the spectrum and no one really liked playing the big vocal-led funky stuff so it was all common from the start.
CD: Most of us come from a hard dance clubbing background so we all like our music uplifting with lots of energy, so even though we have different styles we all have a common ground of wanting to get the crowd going and keep them entertained.
Take us back to the first party you guys all put on together — was it an official Groove Factory launch or were you guys staging soirees before then?
CD: We did loads of birthday parties down in Earls Court at The Finborough and used to go from house to trance and hard dance but we scaled down to just a house event as that was where we were all heading and our punters where enjoying it more.
How would you describe the musical policy at GF? Are there any musical no-nos?
RL: Originally we had said that we would stick to the tough chunkier electro side of house but had to change that somewhat with our bi-monthly residency at The White House. We had to concentrate on booking DJs for the music they play and put them on at the right time. People don’t want to hear pumping dirty house at 9pm when they are sipping their first cocktail of the night. Party music creates a party atmosphere so we try and keep to that policy.
Who else helps to run the Groove Factory parties?
CD: As mentioned, Richard Launch, Richo, Phil Reynolds, Rod Towns, myself and some consultation from our good friend Damo (from Heat).
Does GF have a regular fixture at the moment or is it more a case of one-off parties?
RL: Last year we had three one-off parties at The White House and this year we secured a bi-monthly residency on the first Saturday of the month (Next one: 1st April). We also have plans to do a larger one-off event soon but we don’t want to spread the brand too thin so we choose what we do very wisely.
What’s the most debauched a Groove Factory party has gotten?
CD: Good question…….?
RL: Our first Christmas Party at The Egg was quite decadent — so was the after party at a hotel penthouse..!
Your next event is a joint party with Push Sunday Sessions at The White House in Clapham this Sunday 12th March — what can we expect from this clash of the titans?!
RL: I’m expecting a hangover on Monday (it’s my birthday on Sunday after all!). You guys can expect the typical Push party atmosphere where everyone there is your mate and there is the perfect Sunday soundtrack too.
CD: Dancefloor mayhem and a massive DJ in the form of Tall Paul.
CD
Who on the line-up are you looking forward to seeing play? Do you always have time to check out your colleagues sets when you play at your events or are you usually running about like blue-arsed flies?
CD: There’s always a bit of stress on the night but we are all usually pretty good at checking out each other’s sets and our guests to see what’s going on. Looking forward to checking out ‘Rage with the Machine’ maestro in his Tony Montana guise (a.k.a. Damo from Heat) and of course the big man himself Tall Paul!
RL: I’m very interested in seeing Tall Paul play in such an intimate venue. Tony Montana should be a good one to watch too…! Go Tony!.
Obviously you guys are no strangers to throwing a good party…but who else do you think puts on a good bash?
CD: If you want something a little more underground (electro/house & breaks) you cant beat Kurruption — and now they’ve moved to their new venue at the EP Lounge in Farringdon they’ll be hard to stop. I also love Sunday mayhem at The White House, Push parties have all been wicked and I’ve really enjoyed playing at Sundazed too!
RL: I really enjoy The Gallery at Turnmills as you get world-class DJs in both rooms and it’s a great venue too. My other regular haunts are Sundazed and Push on Sunday and are always loads of fun. Ignition at Inigo is also a favourite of mine, plenty of action for a Friday night for next to nix!
Richard Launch
What’s the venue like for the benefit of those who haven’t been?
CD: Awesome on every level — crowd, cocktails, dance floor, outdoor terrace.
Are you going to make this a big one?
RL: It is fairly safe to say this will be the biggest one yet, with 2 birthdays and a leaving party will ensure there will be a high standard of expectations for a large one. See ya Snake! And hurry back soon!
And finally, what are your ambitions for Groove Factory and the future?
RL: At the moment we are concentrating on holding quality events at The White House and keep building on our presence in South London. Along with our 2nd tour to Ibiza with Heat, we are also teaming up with the Ignition Crew on the 5th of May for a one-off at Inigo.
CD: We’re off to Ibiza again this year with the HeatUK and Radical Escapes tour. If anyone’s interested in joining us at the end of June they can email us at ibiza@groovefactory.info for more details on that one. For the moment though we’re concentrating on making PUSH this weekend one for everyone to remember!
