Mr Sam AKA Samuel Paquet talks exclusively to Harderfaster

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 13-06-06 15:29

Having released one of the biggest trance singles of 2005, ‘Lyteo’, this month sees Samuel Paquet aka dj/producer Mr Sam release his debut artist album of the same name. It comes complete with collaborations with the likes of Kirsty Hawkshaw, Delirium’s vocalist Rani, Shane 54, Crash Course in Science and top African vocalist 13OR.

With Tiësto, Paul van Dyk and Armin Van Buuren shouting his praises, we catch up with Mr Sam to find out more about life, the album and the known universe . . .

’Lyteo’ is your first full artist album, can you tell us what you have set out to achieve?

‘Lyteo’ is my first solo artist album (After ‘Mojado’ on Tiesto’s Magik Muzik label). I wanted to come up with a nice piece of music which will be listenable by a lot of people, not only the EDM Fans. Well that’s the biggest challenge to date for me. I knew how to make dance records for years but here it was a lot different. I didn’t know how the people will receive the album so I wanted to be proud of it even if it wasn’t working so never I thought about any comprises when the album has been recorded.

You can easily understand it while listening to the album. My opinion is that this is not a usual cliché dj/producer album like I’ve been able to hear till now. Of course the background is EDM for sure, but I wanted to create a larger panel of music along the album, a true musical journey with a meaning all over the album and not just a selection of clubtracks . . .

You’ve worked with some pretty exciting artists including the incredible Kirsty Hawkshaw, how did this come about?

Well like many I think, I’ve always been a big fan of Kirsty for many years. Even before working on the album I had the idea to ask Kirsty to collaborate on it. This is what I did, I first set a track over and she directly went for it . . . I can’t tell you how surprised I was! I’m very happy I had the chance to collaborate with such a talented writer and singer. Beside being a great artist, she is such a nice person I wish everyone could meet her once really!

On the album, which tracks do you think personally describe you best and why?

It’s pretty hard to say as I feel the whole album describes me best when listened tothroughout! My favourites are ‘Split’, ‘Lodestar’, ‘Lyteo’ and ‘Kimiya eya no mokili’, because of the message we put on them. Listen carefully and tell me what you think!

How have things been since the release of the album?

I’ve been doing lots of dates of my Lyteo world tour and it’s nice to travel and meet my own fans! I’m just back from Italy (Rome) where I played and it was magik! It was the first time ever that a trance DJ was playing there and it was Italian National Day, an amazing night in this amazing timeless city, I’ve no words to explain how great it was.

I’ll be now playing at the biggest Belgian Parade called City Parade, along David Guetta, Dave Clarke, Martin Solveig etc., then I’ll be in Poland for 4 days in July . . . then back to Rome for other gigs and so on . . . it’s all good!

What is the trance scene like in France right now?

To be honest . . . a disaster! There is nothing you can do in France at the moment. All attention goes to R&B, Hip Hop and from time to time, commercial dance music. I think things will move forward now so I stay positive about this.

I’m getting lots of requests to play in my own country now; like we say in France ‘Impossible is not French’!!!

I read that Giorgio Moroder, Klaus Shulze and even Elvis are all attributed to inspiring your journey into music, which (non trance) artists to you find inspiring at present?

There are so many great artists I love at the moment. There is a French singer called Pascal Obispo who make me feel good every time I’m listen to his music. I have loved Massive Attack for years and Craig Armstrong, who are heroes to me.

Which djs do you personally rate?

I like the old Paul Oakenfold stuff but now I’m looking more for new talent, rather than ‘Top 10 DJs’. I’m playing in many places where I’m discovering amazing new djs. This is where the future is. Well established names are great djs for years and don’t need anymore promotion! If I need to name one it would be Sasha . . . for too many reasons!

You’ve remixed artists as diverse as Sinead O’Connor, Timo Maas, Age Of Love, Praga Khan and Corvin Dalek. What do you feel has been the key to your success?

I think that the artists and fans are really feeling that I’m a really sensitive person. Every record, remixes I have made have been made with love and after a while the people have understood it. I’ve done nearly 65 remixes for big artists and loved everyone! Most of them have been really happy of the results as well as I’m respecting the original and I’m only giving my own vision of it, my interpretation but keeping the spirit of the original is really important . . . many remixers are forgetting that sometimes.

What is your advice to up and coming producers?

Put in a lot of work, patience, and make sure you love music. For example, I can’t see myself doing something different that what I’m doing so everyday and I’m thanking god I can keep on doing what I love. All I can say it to all the new comers is ‘just be yourself’, and don’t try to be someone else. Try to be as sincere as possible while being efficient as well and always believe in what you do, never give up . . . this is the real key of success!

Finally, what’s next for Mr Sam?

Plenty! I’m still touring at the moment for my album, I’m also working together with Dimitri Andreas on a new Mojado album. The new tracks are massive, I can’t wait to have it finished. People will be a surprise when they’ll hear it. I’m also working on some remixes as well. I don’t do as many as in the past, I’m only choosing the one I love and the one I can make Mr Sam!

Thanks for your time Sam.

90% a very good album! Trance and tech-trance fans take note....some juicy techno cuts on there too.
