Proactive interview with superheroes Ed Real & The *Ting*

Every now and then you look up at the sky and have to question what you just saw. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Or is it one of our superheroes swooping past en route to enhance and electrify the lives of thousands of eagerly awaiting music lovers everywhere?
As two of the hardest working superheroes in our industry, The *Ting* and Ed Real come together once more to fight for their right to party @ the legendary Party Proactive on Saturday 2nd September @ Turnmills. We managed to corner the intrepid duo before they flew off to their next destination for a quick fire question session.
Ed, we hear that you’ve been having the time of your life this past month and plan to continue your rampage through the festivals and beyond. Tell us a bit about what you’ve been up to and where you plan on flying to next?
Ed: I got bitten by a radioactive rave monkey at the start of the summer and since then my legendary abilities to push on through have been pumped up and my energy levels extended. Along with leaping across flaming buildings, my sonic powers have heightened enabling me to lay waste to dancefloors with the audio weaponary at my fingertips.
Across the expanse of time and space these powers have been called into action and I am happy that after a summer of battling with the curse of mediocrity I am able to use my gift for good at Proactive. It’s been a long journey and this superhero is ready for some energizing from the power source that is Turnmills.
In terms of music who has saved your life behind the decks with their powerful sounds?
Ed: This summer’s odyssey has been stimulated by a number of excellent performances by fellow audio auteurs: Dana and Isaac at Def Qon One in Holland, where 40,000 disciples of hard joined forces to repel the Edam from the shores at Almeer Strand. The dynamic duo of Tom Real & Rogue Element opening the Glade festival — a set so triumphant it was broadcast by the mad controller Annie Nightingale on Radio One to quell an uprising. Finally Altern 8 and Saint Acid travelled through temporal space to show us what time is love at the very same festival. Rave on . . . music so powerful it could replace the evil of nuclear energy.
What are your special powers?
Ed: We are all lucky to have special powers but mine include dancing like no one’s watching and taking control of a dancefloor by the scruff of the neck and knocking some sense back into it through the medium of out of time clapping and full frontal engagement without the use of a safety net. It’s a thankless task as I am gone by the time the rescued come out of their trance . . . but it’s a task I relish and am happy to know when a job has been well done.
What’s the most heroic thing you’ve ever done?
Ed: For breakfast I save puppies from drowning in the canal. For lunch there are astronauts who need putting back into orbit. Tea is a light meal of putting out fires with a side dish of stopping out of control trains. I sleep well.
With what sort of music do you plan on capturing the crowd with at Proactive on the 2nd?
Ed: My net is cast far and wide and I draw from a myriad of special sources who enable me to duck and weave my magical dance to entrap the dancefloor. For this set I have been training in the magical mountain lair for eons. The spirit guides have deemed me ready and now it’s time for battle! Prepare yourselves for a love in . . . a hard love in . . .
You and The *Ting* have banded together in the past, what has been some of your favourite highlights? And what’s it like playing with another superhero?
Ed: The Ting is like Yoda to my Obe Wan. Together we have used the force widely to defeat the evil empire but pockets of resistance still remain. The fight will go on for millennia and we will never rest.
Our interaction and performance is telepathic and we have trained for years with the dancefloors of HQXL in Holland and Torture Garden in London. We will be warming up at www.bulldogbash.com on 12th August for the real hardcore party people and then will be fully loaded and ready to Riot! on the 2nd . . . stand clear!
Who is your arch nemesis?
Ed: My arch nemesis is the fat controller. A man who strips a party of its essence by not calling on the real knight of the round tables to lay waste to the dancefloor. Instead he uses puppets to pump out the generic and sits in his ivory tower counting the savings. Your time is up and my pigeons have come home to roost!
Like Kryptonite for superman what are the chemicals or substances that cause you to loose your powers and how do you avoid them?
Ed: Most substances actually enhance my powers — I’m trained by druids to extract the best bits, doncha know?
Every superhero has their alter ego that does something sensible during the day, what do you do?
Ed: Mild mannered Ed Real leads a hard life at the coal face of dance music. The poor man works like a dog under his evil masters Element 7 and BK on www.trackitdown.net and www.riotinlondon.com. Like Cinderella he will go to the ball from Friday ‘til Sunday when these dastardly step-sisters are feasting on the fruits of his labour. However, as with all good fairy tales this one has an unhappy ending and our lead character often turns into a cabbage come Monday morning. Poor Cinders . . .
Proactive is the party that encourages everybody to recognise the superhero in themselves by dressing colourful, courageous and ready to party. Who made your outfit and do we need to provide you with a telephone box in order to get changed?
Ed: I work my magic in the dj booth — that’s when the transformation occurs and the ugly duckling becomes a turbo-charged swan. My outfit was forged deep underground in the forges of the dark lord of the dance . . .
From time to time even superheros get caught out, has there ever been a time when it’s all gone horribly Pete Tong?
Ed: Only when I have been jinxed by evil spirits and put my mask on back to front — a rare but historic episode that’s best forgotten . . . let’s never talk of this again!
From super zero to super hero — tell us about the history of the enigma that is The *Ting*? Was the path long and well trodden or was it short and sweet?
The *Ting*: Born from seeds of the stars The *Ting* burst into action on June 12th 1999 at the aptly entitled Tranceformation event @ the now SE1. Balancing precariously upon a stage built by the gremlins of Bristol it was here that we first caught a glimmer of her superhero prowess blowing the roof off to 1000’s of unsuspecting party goers.
Since then it has been a rollercoaster flight of fantasy leading to the far corners of the earth through some of the darkest places on the planet such as the Purple Turtle, Torture Garden, and Fist, fighting demons, ghosts and small furry creatures at every turn.
You still use the classic cape — does this provide balance at speed?
The *Ting*: As with the classic go faster stripe you see on many an already fast car, the cape is used to enhance my speed and velocity. The wind lifts the cape enabling me to climb higher than any other superhero of my kind.
The colour is the secret to balance I now realise. Purple has been more than a little rough and landed me in many a tree, field and rubbish bin, so I am currently considering a change to blue for a smoother more comfortable ride.
What does a superhero eat for breakfast?
The *Ting*: A nutritious and life enhancing cocktail of live organs, phatt baselines and sausage juice.
Has your weapon of choice changed from vinyl to CD over the last few years? Is this effective in battle?
The *Ting*: Changing weapons only makes sense when the current weapon no longer works for you. To drop the vinyl would be like ditching the cape, it’s not necessary but for as long as it gives me a better position it’s always good to carry a spare or two to help get you out of trouble should the need arise.
One of your special powers is your vocal prowess used in tandem with the mixing of beats. Like the banshee or siren do you use your voice to attract sailors towards the rocks, or like a mermaid do you aim to pleasure the listener?
The *Ting*: Special powers need training and discipline in order to make the most of them. I have been training this particular power for many years now and have the ability to lift people out of their bodies and smash them into the ceiling or float gracefully around the edges of heaven depending on the mission at hand.
Your mild mannered alter ego Zoe Hart prefers the dulcet tones of dirty electro whilst The *Ting* only gets her rocks off to extreme beats. Do the two personas ever end up fighting over what to play?
The *Ting*: Constantly. The *Ting* is very hard to contain, forever wanting to burst through and supercharge everything. Zoe has in her own right managed a feat no other has dared to venture towards, that of taming her extreme counterpart. Both are currently heading towards a final battle at a Proactive event sometime next year.
What time is love at Proactive?
The *Ting*: About 3am, where it will remain eternal.
