Superfast Oz ignites the Fridge for Superfish! Reported by Danny Gilligan & Superfish! / Submitted 16-08-06 17:05 This Friday night something very special is hitting the Fridge, something that, like Christmas, may well only happen once a year. And, like Christmas, a lot of time and effort has gone into making sure certain traditions have been kept to . . . Captain Tinrib aka Jon Bell aka The Skippwhore is back from the high seas, and he's brought his legendry party Superfish! to dock at the Fridge for a special one-off ninth birthday celebration this Friday 18 August.. Led by the infamous Tinrib, Superfish! parties were some of the most explosive events of their time. Famous for their fabulous production and kick-arse line-ups, they started at the Soundshaft, then paid Crash a quick visit before finding their spiritual home at the Fridge, where they set the template for many a hard dance rave. But times change and people move on, the Skippwhore himself leaving the country for fairer shores. It looked like Superfish! had indeed had its day. With the Captain back in town for his summer tour, the rumours started to fly . . . would Superfish! cast its net again for another feeding frenzy? Or had the Skipper's move to the greener pastures of New Zealand restricted him to the Antipodean islands' fishing laws, for if any one promotion had used its quota of awesome parties up in their time, it would have to be Superfish! With the Fridge rising from its Brixtonian ashes to reclaim its title as one of the capital's most fabulous venues, it was too good an opportunity to pass up. After much deliberation and negotiation, Superfish! will celebrate its ninth birthday this Friday 18 August at the Fridge. With D.F.Q back on warm-up duties and Karim closing in the high NRG manner only he can pull off, the line-up in between includes the original Superfish! ressies and djs: Dave Randall, Max Alien, Sol Ray, Superfast Oz and live PAs from Wierdo and Tinrib himself, as well as original Superfish! production from Karma and Nuroptics. Having set the scene with a stormer of a set at Danny Gilligan's new promotion Ignition, fishing lover Superfast Oz gives us a quick preview into what we can expect this Friday night as Danny casts the questions . . . So Mr Superfast Oz, are you looking forward to Superfish! this Friday at the Fridge? Yes I think its going to be super duper! Last Friday you more than ignited the dance floor for the launch party of my new night Ignition. How will you set at Superfish! be any different (if at all)? It will be specially tailored for a special 1-off Superfish! which I feel very privileged to be playing at. Can you remember the first Superfish! you played at? What did you play? Will we hear any of those classics this Friday night? It was at the Soundshaft at the back of Heaven all those years ago, before the party even moved to the Fridge. I don’t remember exactly what I played, but do remember the period. This Friday I’ll be playing some modern reinterpretations of those tracks. Superfast Oz a funky and catchy dj name, but where does it come from, might we ask? An Australian cleaning company who did a massive TV ad campaign around 1992−3 when I started to play out as DJ Oz. It soon became my name without anyone asking me! Would you shed some light on your various guises and collaboration, i.e. OD404, Satellite Kidz, D&G, Big Tool 4 U and Hyperloop. How did they come about and what are they all about? OD404 is obviously Dom Sweeten and I, in fact so is Hyperloop (our new techno outfit) and Satellite Kidsz (our bounce stylee pseudonym). The others are collaborations between myself and Project Mayhem. So for all the up and coming and budding producers on the scene, do you have any specialist tips and how do go about preparing for tunes? Nope. Lots of hours sat in front of the screen getting late nights and square eyes. Besides all of your many existing collaborations, do you have any new ones you are working on or plan to in the near future? We’ve not hooked up yet but Paul King (aka F1, Trauma etc.) has asked me to do a project with him in the autumn. That should be interesting as I’ve been playing all his stuff for years and still play it now. Do you have any new releases up your sleeve? Kaktai have at least another 2 releases planned between now and winter. I won’t say exactly which tracks as we may switch them about on the release schedule. Being an internationally renowned dj, do you find any peculiar differences between crowds in the UK and the rest of the world? Most of the crowds everywhere else usually have an age limit (to a degree). There’s mostly younger audiences overseas. Here in the U.K. this scene appeals to a much wider age range. What is your outlook on the UK clubbing scene as it stands at the moment, especially the hard-nrg scene? It’s gone underground again, back to where it started when I was a novice dj, with smaller clubs, parties and festivals here and there. It’s not so easy to make a living from the job, but it’s not any less a passion for me. I’ve seen it change and change again and know I still find I enjoy what I do for those who want to hear me play. You’ve been djing for 15 years now, how has your style progressed over the years? I started on more industrial techno like Lenny D, Mokum etc., then go into more Euro hard trance, which then got my attention drawn to the U.K. sound, which was predominately in the gay scene. It was a healthy mix of trance and house but with a rocket up it’s arse. Hi-nrg, nu-nrg = hard house, or so it became eventually. Bangingtunes.com predominantly trades in vinyl, are there any plans on going digital? My involvement with BT is very limited these days, but when I was working full swing at BTHQ 3 years ago we decide to get stuck into digital and we were one of the first companies to explore this new domain. Unfortunately we go distracted by our two shops, and then I reduced my responsibilities in order to further pursue my artist and recording career. Do you have any special plans for the rest of 2006? Launching superfastoz.com, as it’s been a long time coming and is practically ready to rock. There’s going to be lots of cool graphics and features, plus all the information on any events I’m doing. Image to most artists is extremely important, how would you best describe Superfast Oz? It’s all about the hair (apparently)! Kaktai has re-released a couple of the original Tinrib tracks; are there any more in the pipelines? That’s a good possibility that’s been discussed, so now Jon’s in the country hopefully we’ll discuss it some more . . . we’ve done it once and hopefully we’ll do it again! Do you have a favourite Tinrib track? Yes it’s ‘Progressive Llama’ by R.R. Fierce and the Captain, I think it was Tinrib 15. Have you and the Captain ever thought about a collaboration? Well we did! Tinrib 23 was me, Kristian and the Captain. The two tracks were ‘Deaf by Stereo’ and ‘Let’s Go’. You’re a bit of a fisherman I hear . . . Yes I’m super fast and a fisherman, so probably the most qualified person to play this Friday! Finally, what's your favourite kind of fish? Catfish!
