The Olly Perris brain-picking sessions ’06: Innovate preview

Reported by Jamie McCarogher / Submitted 13-09-06 18:55

Olly Perris is a 22 year old dj/producer from Southampton, UK. He started mixing at the tender age of 15 and had his first release at the age of 17, which went on to sell over 3000 records within its first week on the shelves. Since then this man has been going from strength to strength. Aside from running the Addiction Digital label, Olly can still be found playing out somewhere most weekends. Ahead of Olly’s set at Innovate at the Fridge this weekend, I had the opportunity to get together with this real life legend and pick his brain . . .

Olly is a resident at one of London’s best up and coming hard dance parties, Addiction. Add to that the fact that he’s a former Nukleuz records artist with 15 releases and 50000 records sold, you wouldn’t want to miss a chance to catch the man in action! Olly will be appearing at the Fridge this Saturday for one of London’s premier hard dance nights: Innovate, where he’ll be gracing the main room along with Amber D, Nick Sentience, Phil Reynolds, Nicki S and Martin Begley for Innovate’s Amber D Showcase. Be sure not to miss this! In the meantime, read on for an insight into the world of Olly Perris.

How did you get into the hard dance scene and just how old were you when you became a dj?

I originally got into dance music when I was 15 years old through listening to Judge Jules on Radio 1. It was around the time when he was playing the big ‘99 stuff like ‘Out Of The Blue’ etc. I absolutely loved the energy in the records and I was just naturally drawn to the sound, although I didn’t really know why! Through listening to Jules’ ‘Clubbers Guide To Ibiza’ CDs I got into mixing, as I wanted to know how the tracks were programmed together so well. I guess it was around 2000 when I got into hard dance. I was a bit of an internet geek back then and got talking to a guy called Chris Hutchinson, who played me Andy Farley’s ‘Bring It Back’ over ICQ. I was instantly hooked and from then on never looked back!

I started djing when I was 15, and took it up properly on decks at 16. It’s always been difficult to say whether I prefer djing or production more but hand on heart, I think I prefer djing, as you’re actually there interfacing with a crowd and it’s great to watch people having a good time and to see their reactions to the tracks you’re playing in the flesh — it’s such a good feeling!

Since then what has been the one event you’ve most enjoyed playing at?

In 2005 I toured Australia, which was by far and away the best experience of my life. I got to play three wicked gigs in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne and met some of the most fantastic clubbers and promoters on earth. All the crowds were so responsive, unbelievably smiley and just plain nice! It made the actual djing so much easier to do and to be flown across the world to do the one thing you love more than anything was just absolutely incredible. I cherished absolutely every single second of it, and hopefully I’ll be going over again soon to do more of the same. I count myself so unbelievably lucky to have done it — it really was a dream come true for me.

What inspires you when in the studio and what djs do you take inspiration from?

When I’m producing I try to let the ideas flow from my head as much as possible, as it’s preferable to try to create your own sound. I try to listen to as much varied music as possible and just try to get in that creative ‘zone’ where you can ream off ideas really easily. I do sometimes find the whole process frustrating though, so it really helps to have a clear head and be completely confident with what you’re doing. At the moment I take influences from Marco V and Paul Van Dyk — they both have that ‘instant’ factor where you know exactly when they’ve come on by the first tune they play. This is something I’d love to achieve in my sets and something I’m always trying to improve upon doing.

You were last interviewed for HarderFaster in December of last year, what’s happened since then, what have you released since then, have you been having fun?

Yeah baby, life has been wicked! I’ve just graduated with a History degree from Southampton University and have started working full time at Trackitdown as joint Label Manager, which is a great experience and a totally enthralling job. My life has changed in so many ways both on a personal level and on a professional level, and I really do feel I’ve experienced five years worth of life in one year!

In terms of releases, I’ve had a couple out through my Addiction Digital label and alongside the legend that is Andy T, we’ve established Addiction Digital as the world’s number one hard trance download label, which is a fantastic accolade! I’ve also played some great gigs for Heat, Riot!, Twisted and Basic and have headlined several of the big main rooms around the country, which has been a really cool experience. It’s been a totally crazy ride in my life for the last year but I’ve always tried to be as thankful as possible to those who have given me some incredible opportunities, and I’m always trying to stay 100% focused on what I’m doing, although everyone who knows me will tell you this really isn’t the case! It really has been a great year, and not at one point have I ever stopped and regretted a single thing.

What tracks would you say you are most renowned for and which ones are your favourites?

I think that the tracks I’m best known for are ‘The Venue’ and the remix of Vinylgroover’s ‘Kokane’ on Nukleuz which were my collaborations with the awesome talent that is Ashley Sinclair. I owe so much to Ashley — he was a brilliant creative partner and had the most incredible ideas with his tracks. He recently actually became a father, so has taken time off from the scene, but when this guy returns he’s gonna hit hard, so prepare yourselves! Out of all my releases and productions, my personal favourites are my remix of The Edison Factor’s ‘Nervous Breakdown’, hopefully due for release soon, and mine and Ashley’s aforementioned remix of ‘Kokane’.

With your upcoming set at the Fridge this Saturday for Innovate, have you got something special planned, can we expect a Lionel Richie bootleg?

Lionel Richie!! Now that’s an idea. Anyone who hasn’t heard his new single ‘I Call It Love’ should do so immediately — the man just ain’t lost it over the years!! On a serious note (!), I’ve actually done some really special edits of some tech-trance tracks, including one of an unreleased Marcel Woods single and a few others of various other big tracks. In each case I’ve either added extra drums/FX or added in acapellas/samples of other tracks to really give them some extra beef — I just hope the crowd enjoys them as much as I enjoyed making them!

The one I’m most proud of though is a bootleg I’ve done of a very famous rock track and an equally famous trance anthem. Hopefully it won’t ‘kill’ you with its ‘bright’ness. (OK, that clue was a subtle as a brick.) They’ll only be played this Saturday so make sure you’re down the front to hear them!

With the hard dance scene always changing, especially now with current up front producers being electro and psy influenced, what are your opinions on the direction hard dance has taken over the last year?

I think it’s great to see psy and electro becoming big influences on the sound, but we’re at the point now where the production quality of psy trance really needs to morph into the production quality of hard trance to give it that extra oomph and really drive it forward. Of course, Nick Sentience is the master at this and he is leagues ahead of anyone else in the scene at the moment by daring to do something so different and yet so well received. I think the electro influence is something yet to be tapped into but something which I think, with the right tracks of course, will be a positive influence. It’s dodgy times at the moment with labels folding left right and centre and others playing it safe with traditional material, but the producers are definitely there to keep this great scene thriving!

How would you describe your music style?

Energetic, uplifting but with elements you may not normally expect! I try to play a really varied selection of music as I think keeping yourself to the myopic generic hard trance sound is a bit limiting. It’s always more exciting for me when I’m out if I hear a tune completely out of sync with what you’d expect but, of course, you need to play the right tunes to make this work, which as a dj is something I’m always trying to work on.

Having toured Australia in the past, how would you say there clubbing scene differs from the scene we are all currently enjoying here in sunny ol’ England?

I think that UK clubbers don’t really understand how lucky they are when it comes to great line-ups. We consider a line-up with, for example, Phil Reynolds, Nick Sentience, Technikal etc. on a standard line-up, whereas any one of those names on a line-up in Australia would cause people to go mad! The Australians are really passionate about their hard trance and they go crazy for foreign djs out there. They do love their hardstyle too though, bless them. I think that’s one scene which is huge across the world but seems to have completely missed England. Whether that’s a good thing or not, I don’t know, but I’m all up for getting more of it over here! Why not, eh?

After Innovate, what event do you have planned next?

I’ll be back to The Fridge on 30th Sept for Addiction, where I’m a resident, this time playing back 2 back with the rather lovely Cally Gage. Production-wise, I’m working on some more original material at the moment and am due to release new tracks in January, so keep your eyes peeled for that! As for my life, well, God only knows what’s in store on this rollercoaster for me but whatever doesn’t kill you only makes it stronger, so bring it on I say!!!
