Hard Dance Awards preview: meet the regional heroes who keep the UK pumping!

Reported by Ed Real / Submitted 25-01-07 00:31

Although the Hard Dance Awards have been held in London for the last couple of years, the awards is totally committed to showcasing and celebrating the scene all over the UK and beyond. Every weekend, promoters and DJs around the country hold events that keep the hard dance movement alive and kicking in their area and without them it'd be a smaller and a much less interesting business.

For the first time in the history of the awards, venue size allows us to doff our caps in the direction of those players around the UK whose hard work and commitment through the ups and downs make hard dance one of the most comprehensive and far reaching underground dance communities on the planet. Regional heroes we salute you!

Anyone who has had a go at putting on a party or club night will have seen just how much work and effort goes into dragging people away from Celebrity Big Brother on a wet winter night. These guys do it month in month out and have been on top of their game for years. Most of the big names playing in the other two arenas will have had the pleasure of meeting them and the HDA party on the 24th February is going to be when they all get to let their hair down. Everyone at Harderfaster is welcome to come and join in the fun…

Olly Perris & Andy T representing Addiction events & record label and London

NAME: Olly Perris

LOCATION: South London

EVENT: ADDICTION!

YEARS PROMOTING & DJ’ING: One year running a record label, six years DJ'ing

CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Touring Australia in 2005 and establishing Addiction Digital as a scene-leading label.

WHAT MAKES PARTYING IN YOUR PART OF THE COUNTRY SO MUCH FUN: London are the highest concentration of nutters in one space on planet Earth! But they all know and love their tunes, and they are most certainly the loudest!

WHO/WHAT STYLE DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO BE BIG IN 2007 FROM YOUR REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE: Who — Ashley James, MDA & Spherical. What style — the return of good, old fashioned boshing hard trance!

HOW BIG IS YOUR POSSE COMING TO THE AWARDS: We're representing London so technically around 4,000 people!

WEBSITE: www.addictionclubbing.com

NAME: Andy T

LOCATION: Maidenhead, UK

EVENT: Addiction Events/Addiction Digital

YEARS PROMOTING & DJ’ING: 3+ yrs DJ’ing/2+ yrs events/1+ years label boss

CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Apart from being booked to play at the 2006 Hard Dance Awards, it would probably have to be hearing Technikal drop Nick Rowland’s remix of ‘Overdrive’ (Addiction Digital’s biggest selling track) at our second birthday party at the Fridge, Brixton, last September. The dance floor was absolutely rocking and the club was packed! Watching and taking in the atmosphere from the side lines when Alf dropped Nick’s remix was such an incredible feeling! Everything I’d ever wanted to achieve was right in front of me and I’ll never forget that sight as long as I live!

WHAT MAKES PARTYING IN YOUR PART OF THE COUNTRY SO MUCH FUN: The variety! London has to have the most diverse range of dance music out of all the cityies in the UK, Europe and probably beyond! There’s just so many good promotions, so many good clubs and so many good people. Personally I’ve made so many good friends in recent years and it’s them that makes London the party capital for me.

WHO/WHAT STYLE DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO BE BIG IN 2007 FROM YOUR REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE: Well Addiction has always pushed hard trance with both our events and label releases, and all of our resident DJs are showing massive promise and are all contributing to the scene in a big way at the moment. Olly Perris, who’s both resident and co-label boss, has just been featured as a MixMag Future Hero and is securing some fantastic gigs in both the UK and beyond. MDA & Spherical have just been featured in DJmag and constantly come up with the musical goods, having been responsible for some of the biggest productions and remixes in 2006, not too mention their fantastic Live PA with Jennie Rix. Finally, Ashley James has been receiving praise left, right and center for both his DJ and production talents, so I’d have to stay loyal and say that UK hard trance hasn’t gone anywhere and with some seriously talented artists pushing things forward at the moment, it’s going to be bigger in 2007 than ever!

HOW BIG IS YOUR POSSE COMING TO THE AWARDS: Massive! It’s a London thing baby. See you all down the front!

WHAT MAKES PARTYING IN YOUR PART OF THE COUNTRY SO MUCH FUN: The people are what make partying great, the Midlanders are always well up for it! The venues are wicked too, they range from small intimate venues to your bigger superclubs. Recently there's lots of events on and wherever you choose to go there's guaranteed to be a great atmosphere!

WHO/WHAT STYLE DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO BE BIG IN 2007 FROM YOUR REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE: Local Brummie lad Riggsy is going to be huge in 2007. He is on fire at the moment with his production, definitely one to watch.

HOW BIG IS YOUR POSSE COMING TO THE AWARDS: My posse will be massive for the Awards including the Polysexual promoter Chris Moffit, many of my friends and my girlfriend who is organising the Lashettes. So I will be travelling down with the Lashettes!!! Lucky me.

WHAT MAKES PARTYING IN YOUR PART OF THE COUNTRY SO MUCH FUN: The clubbers down in the South-West are always bang up for a full on non stop party. Open minded, friendly, energetic, and just that little bit mad!!

WHO/WHAT STYLE DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO BE BIG IN 2007 FROM YOUR REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE: The 'in' electro sound influencing different genres. DJs such as Cally & Juice, Organ Donors, Alex Kidd — the guys that are bringing fun to the floor and more than just playing records!

HOW BIG IS YOUR POSSE COMING TO THE AWARDS: We got a right old crew of south-coast wronguns making the mission to the big smoke and I’m sure as well as the Tranzaction boys and girls there will be plenty of the Eyecon/Dance Academy massive joining forces to make the ultimate ‘av it force.

Steve Gillen from Cyberkitten representing the Midlands

NAME: Steve Gillen

LOCATION: Milton Keynes, Bucks.

EVENT: CyberKitten

YEARS PROMOTING & DJ’ING: Started DJ’ing in 1998 so 9 years now!! How time flies when you’re having fun. Enjoyed every second of it to be honest, and can’t get enough. Bring it on! Genres come and go, tracks peak and fade, styles develop… but I will always love it HARD.

CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Getting made resident for such a prestigious promotion as CyberKitten. It's been all go since then. It really did top off a crazy year in true style and I will always be grateful for being given the opportunity by Yojo & Colin to shine through and show just what I'm capable of. They have given me so much support and this HDA awards set is dedicated to them.

WHAT MAKES PARTYING IN YOUR PART OF THE COUNTRY SO MUCH FUN: The South Midlands Dance scene is fantastically energetic and creative. You’ll find a great cross section of excellent music, at your doorstep. The CyberKitten clubbers are like nothing else I have ever experienced. The night has a real friendly vibe along with a charged up atmosphere second to none. Colourful hard dance cybers mix easily with dedicated dude house lovers, everyone’s well up for piece of the action and no-one wants the party to end. That 'one more tune' can often turn into five more tunes. All I can say is why the hell not! We’re all out there to have fun and stomp our socks off. If I'm not playing the closing set you'll find me in the middle of the dance floor going for it.

WHO/ WHAT STYLE DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO BE BIG IN 2007 FROM YOUR REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE: 2006 saw a real mixture of styles and sounds. A fantastic step forward. I really do think the hard NRG sound is gonna explode before long. I have just finalised the first release for my hard NRG record label ‘Delete The Weak’ which is due out the end of February. It’s a showcase of all things filthy. I’ve teamed up with a number of talented artists to present a cross section of hard house and NRG. Spectrum runs from chunky sounds to peak time beats and killer filthy closers. This is a true representation of cutting edge, underground stompage. Give the people what they wanna hear. The mucky pupps! DJs to watch out for in 2007.... HyperVixen, Andy Rise, Matt Pickup, Neil E, Simon Vegas, Lucy Fur, Brad Duke and all of the CK bangers. These guys n gals know how to rock a show.

HOW BIG IS YOUR POSSE COMING TO THE AWARDS: Wicked wicked jungalist MASSIVE! Think we got half the county coming down to the awards to be honest. I know nearly all of the Crew and CyberKitten regulars are chomping at the bit waiting for this. Excited is such an understatement. Our party bus is gonna be rammed to the hilt for this trip. I’m sure we will have more than our share of mad clubber supporters there to fly the flag and bust some crazy moves.
