The King's last hurrah
Reported by Toolbox

Paul King is a legend, no doubt! His roster of tracks has featured on label gems like Tidy, VC, Flashpoint and Toolbox while DJs like The Tidy Boys, Paul Glazby, Lisa Lashes and many more have clamoured to get his tracks on their mixes. With such a pedigree there's no doubt his new album, Global Dynamics, will be a success, but it's a final chance to hear what makes hard edged aficionados beat a path to his door as he's decided to move on from hard house.
Its loss will be another styles gain as since 1998 his own tracks have continued to get better and better, then of course there's been his aliases like Control Freakz and F1 or his collaborations like Terrance & Phillip, Overload and who could forget Pants & Corset. Now ahead of his latest and last release we went over to get the low down on the King of hard house.
It’s well documented that you are hanging up your Hard House slippers and will not be releasing anymore Hard House singles. What is the main reason for doing this Paul?
Well, I’ve been producing now for over 15 years, and 12 of those have been taken up, in the majority, by hard house. I think that I’ve grown as a producer, and I’ve had ideas for a long time about creating an album that is more personal to me. I’ve actually tried to give up hard house on more than one occasion, but due to recording demands I’ve been tied up. However, I no longer have those restrictions, and I feel that I now have the chance to push myself to be more creative.
You have a massive back catalogue or tracks and remixes. Are you able to tell us your favourite three remixes and your favourite three original tracks?
Err. I really have to choose?? Tracks would be 1) Cuz I’m Rockin 2) Red Alert 3) Odyssey Part 2. Remixes 1) Incisions – Beyond Motion 2) TDV – Bring The Beat Back 3) 99th Floor Elevators – Hooked, and Montreal Sound – Sure of You as joint 3rd. I did have to look on my website for these because I couldn’t remember what I’d done lol.
If you could be remembered for just one Hard House production, which would it be?
I really don’t have a clue. Maybe the new Trauma single “Stone Rockin” because it’s different, but it’s not a classic, so no-one knows it yet. Pass.
Your new album is a celebration of your career as a producer and includes many of your classic tracks from labels like Tripoli and Tidy. Are we ever likely to see an album celebrating Paul King remixes because you have been responsible for some killer ones?
It’s not something I’ve thought of, and I think it would be a licensing nightmare as some of the labels are no longer in existance. I think it would be quite hard to get people on board for it too, especially in the current climate. Nice idea though.
Tripoli is just about to start up again. Would you not be tempted to do another F1 release for the label if they asked you?
No. I’ve already drawn the line now, and don’t think that I can step back over it, not even for Tripoli. Though I will be interested to see in what direction they take the label.
Are there any records you have written that you wished you hadn’t?
Maybe the last P&C record which I thought was dire, but Chris wanted to put it out.
Are there any records you have written and not released that you wished you had?
I think maybe Heat, which was the follow-up to Red Alert. However it is on the album, but in demo form, so at least you’ll get to hear it. I may finish it one day.
Many labels have been and gone throughout the years, many of which you have featured on. Which labels have particularly stood out for you throughout the years?
TDV, Tripoli and Tidy, because they were all pioneering different sounds around the same time. Also Chug N Bump, I used to love most of their releases, and still play some today. I’m still working on a remix of Bombay for Dave Randall.
In your own words, are you able to tell us exactly what Hard House is?
Hard house for me was exactly what its title insinuates, house but harder edged. I think the early days were what defined the genre, it was always fun, the music made you smile, you very rarely find that anymore.
Is there any particular reason you called your album “Global Dynamics?”
Yeah, it’s actually form a TV series, A Town Called Eureka. It’s the name of the research company in it, but I thought it worked quite well as an album title. There were other names that were thrown around in the early stages, but that one always seemed to sit right.
We heard a rumour you had an agreement with Nik Denton to feature on every 5th release on Toolbox. What is he going to do now your have retired?
Well I think he has a few unreleased tracks of ours that he might put out, if not I can lend him about a dozen or two, haha! I’m sure he’ll manage, the whole 5th release thing was a fluke anyway, but after TB25 we realised it just thought it was a good gimmick. I think he has the new F1 single to release as 50!
You’ve stamped your mark on many a dance-floor all over the world. Are you going to carry on DJing Hard House or are you moving away from it completely?
Afraid not. My last hard house gig is on Aug 5th in Brighton at Breathless. It should be a good night; the line up is Paul Janes, Dave Randall, Tinrib (Live), Ilogik and myself. Though I’ve had a few offers to play other places I don’t think it’s fair to the people who will be in Brighton that weekend. Last gig, means last gig.
On your travels throughout the years DJing, what is the strangest thing that has happened to you?
Getting stripped searched in New Zealand, because my partner had been smoking weed in the airport in Australia before we left. It was quite funny to see him being humped by a search dog, I think it made his day, haha!
Quick Fire Questions to get to know you:
Indian or Chinese take away?
Chinese
Can of beer or bottle of wine?
Beer
Staying up late or getting up early?
Getting up early
Sex in the city or Desperate Housewives?
Desperate Housewives
CDs or vinyl?
CDs (just for sheer convenience – but I do love vinyl.)
Clubbing in Ibiza or Clubbing in London?
London
Crumpets or Muffins?
Crumpets haha....ask Nik.
Night out with friends or night in with the other half?
Both
Tidy or Tripoli?
Tough, but I think Tripoli just.
America or Australia?
Australia hands down.
Millionaire or just enough to be happy?
Millionaire, I’m already happy.
Finally, is “Global Dynamics“ really the last we’ll hear of you in the Hard House scene?
For now, yes. There maybe plans to release a singles box later in the year, which will include new remixes, but we’ll see how the album does. I’ve really had a ball over the years, but I think it’s time to move on and do something else. If I’m not challenged I get bored, and I don’t ever want that to happen to my music. Who knows, I may feel that in 2 or 3 years time I might want to produce a new F1 single, but it won’t be for a while yet. You might get lucky though.
Paul Kng – Global Dynamics is out on Toolbox during August

I am gutted I won't be in Brighton to hear this - really gutted! Your various 'scores' are what got me and so many others into dance music from hearing it week in week out at trade. Whether it was Tony, Steve, Ian or Pete dropping your stuff - it rocked, and it always meant it was time step things up a gear on that dancefloor.
Good luck with everything love! Can't wait to hear the album. See you soon! Joan, xxx
