How Does He Do It? Some hard dance medicine from the good Tony Duzzit

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 25-09-07 23:31

Now he’s gone and done it! Not content with the miracle of life and bringing his first-born into the world, Tony Duzzit is back on the scene and breathing some much-needed new life into Brixton. While HarderFaster wishes Tony and Kirsty our biggest congratulations, we were also intrigued: how much sleep deprivation can one couple take? With the return of Hectic UK this Saturday 29 September, the good doctor is well and truly back on call to share his hard dance medicine with the masses...

You’ve been out of the game for a bit recently, looking after a new arrival! How does it feel to be a Daddy Duzzit?

It feels great bringing someone into the world. I’ve been with Kirsty for nearly 11 years and we’re over the moon. Stanley is nearly four weeks old now and he’s settled in just fine. I had to take a step back from promoting for a while: the industry needed to pick itself back up again and there was no point in running too many events anymore. It’s all about quality not quantity these days. I feel hard dance in London has suffered with the collapse of the George IV and the almighty Fridge.

How do you think you’ll be able to balance the demands of parenthood with the demands of being a promoter and DJ?

Hahaha.... it’s not easy. Luckily enough I have a big family round me and my son has six grandparents ready for action. My mum’s looking after him on the 29th. So for now we have it good.

Do you want your son to work within the scene in days to come or do you want him to do something else?

I would like to see him get into music somewhere and have him jump on a music making programme at an early age. He’ll be able to use my CDJ 1000s whenever he wants, so who knows where it could end up. No matter what music he likes I will be his manager… hahaha!

You’ve also got the return of Hectic UK coming up; how are you feeling about it?

I’m very excited about our next party. HecticUK has a three-year history in London and we have our strongest line up to date coming up on Saturday 29th September. United Funk Organisation (UFO) are coming up from the south coast area to host the Ice Box — we have a double decker coach full already which will be @The Fridge from the second we open our doors. Nick Sentience, Ed Real and Carl Nicholson headline the main room for us..... We can’t wait to take on the Fridge!

Who are you most looking forward to hear play and why?

Nick and Ed at Hectic — These guys light The Fridge up like no other DJs on the scene.

You’re returning to The Fridge, a notoriously difficult place to fill at the moment. What are your thoughts on all the difficulties that the venue has faced over the past year or so? And what has been done so far at the venue to reassure people and bring them back?

It’s my first time at The Fridge and I’m over the moon to be hosting an event in there on a Saturday night, I’m aware that it’s not as busy as it has been in recent years but I’m sure we will have a good turn out.. The venue has had a fair bit of bad press recently: first there was the raid, which it recovered very quickly indeed. Secondly there was some trouble, but from a minority of individuals that spoiled it for everyone else. It’s now under new management and with tighter door security to ensure the punters are safe. I’ve heard there’s been lots of people barred recently which can only add to the Fridge building itself back to the best club in London. I had a meeting in there a couple of weeks ago and I saw a new sound system going into place that sounded absolutely awesome. We need people to stand up and be counted, help bring our favourite club back to its best!

Just how important do you think The Fridge is to London Clubbing?

The Fridge is so important for hard dance clubbing in London, it’s our mothership of venues. We need it up and running the way it used to be. I’ve heard some of the plans for 2008 and they’re very exciting. I feel it’s our heart beat of the industry!

How do you think events can work to improve the reputation of the club?

Bring back all the big names and bring back all the top draw promotions, it won’t take long to improve the reputation of this historic super club. The Fridge is known all over the world and nearly every clubber has been to it at some point.

What else do you have planned for Hectic UK?

We have a number of events planned for the Fridge next year. HecticUK has had a fantastic run for three years, using G4, 3rd Base and Factory. The Fridge is our natural route of progression and it’s good to be at our town of birth again. We were born and bred in Brixton so it back to our roots after a year in Vauxhall.

What about EZ Duzzit? When are you planning to bring that back?

EZ Duzzit will be teaming up with HecticUK for our usual blast to celebrate the New Year celebrations. This will be our fourth crack at it and each year we have grown bigger and bigger — 24hrs has had over 600 people in each year. EZ and HecticUK will not be doing a 24hour party, instead this year it will be at the Fridge on NYD from 12noon till 8pm. If we can repeat the performance from the past we will be set for an absolute cracker of a party.

What else are you doing at the moment?

I’m involved with Extreme Euphoria, where I’ve been made the new resident and I help out with the promoting of it. It’s at Heaven on Friday 16th of November and the early bird tickets ran out in just over a week, record tickets sales at the moment so we should be in for one of the best nights of the year. One for the diary!

Thanks Tony and see you on the 29th!
