Does anyone do it better than Slipmatt?

Reported by PK / Submitted 07-01-08 09:00

Regarded by many as the godfather of rave, the award-winning DJ Slipmatt has been a major player in the evolution of dance music. Responsible for many a hit, his early productions are true classics of the scene, his current work is at the forefront of modern dance. A driving force for the dance scene you could say.

A Kiss100 ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award was bestowed upon the legendary DJ over ten years ago and since then his foresight has pioneered new genres and kept the hardcore scene fresh and alive. Now he returns with another album so PK went round to find out about remixing, mud and, of course, Helter Skelter.

The name Slipmatt is now synonymous with the ‘Helter Skelter” album series, what can we look forward to on the newest instalment?

I feel that we have moved on and progressed with every album we’ve released so far , and this latest album probably fits me as a DJ the best so far at this moment in time. I have played all of the genres from Rave Nation for many years now and it’s been especially exciting bring the Old Skool Drum & Bass in to the equation. I feel the album really captures the whole rave experience.

The ‘Rave Breaks’ disc features remixes of classics and recent anthems, many of which you do yourself. Which do you prefer doing?

I love making all the tunes I’m involved in with the Ravebreaks as well as the Hardcore. The Old Skool remixes are very refreshing for me, as I have played the originals for so many years, but then the House tunes we remix in to Ravebreaks are also exciting as I still play a lot of House music these days, especially through the summer in places like Ibiza and the Greek Islands. I also enjoy writing new music which I believe is necessary to keep that bit of freshness in our scene.

In the rave and hardcore scene, there are literally hundreds of classic anthems, how do you select the gems to re-work for the rave breaks CD?

I always pick from my favourite Old Skool anthems that I feel I can make a positive difference to, or from tunes from a different genre that I really want to play in my Old Skool / Ravebreaks set.

Among the many remixed anthems that have featured on the Helter Skelter album series, a significant amount have been productions of your own. If you could have any one of your tracks remixed by any artist, which track and remixer would you have?

It would be great to get Prodigy to remix ‘On A Ragga Tip’ in return for mine and Billy’s remix of ‘Out Of Space’.

You started DJing when you were just ten years old, and you’ve been at the top of your game for over a decade, what key moments stand out to you, and when did you first think “I’ve made it”?

I first did ‘Top Of The Pops’ in 1991 which was 16 years ago. I think the “I’ve made it” moment was when I had phone calls all day while I was working as an apprentice sparks on a building site back in September 1991. By the end of that day me and Lime had 8 record deals on the table to choose from for ‘DJs Take Control / Way In My Brain. What a day!

By all accounts, you’ve played some pretty messy parties. What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you in a club?

Messy as in muddy, the worst one was probably ‘Vision’ back in 1992. Embarrassing wise though, probably when I was pissed not so long ago and just as I thought I was going to finish my set I downed a whole bottle of Champagne in one go. Next thing the promoter asked me to play for another half hour, oh fuck! I was already half cut, and I blanked out after wobbling around for about 20 minutes. I’m told I was scratching for the last ten minutes of the night to 1000 people with no other music playing. To whoever was there, I sincerely apologise!

What goes through your mind just before you go on the decks?

It really depends on what I see before I go on. Sometimes you just know that the punters will really go for what you are about to play and that’s a great feeling.

There is much debate in the Vinyl Vs CD battle. Which format do you play?

I have been CD only now for about 4 years. I don’t have a problem with vinyl, but you can do so much more with CDs.

You’re something of a legend in Ibiza, yet Hardcore and Hard Dance are somewhat minorities on the White Isle. How do you find the parties over there?

I love them, always have and always will. Ibiza is a very special place for me, sort of home from home. It’s party central, if you haven’t been you must go there and try it.

What do you do when you’re not playing music?

Making music haha… I don’t get a lot of time off but when I do I try and make time for my kids as well as my mates and my wonderful woman.

If you were going to be shipwrecked on a desert Island and could only take one thing with you, what would it be?

My mobile phone so I could ring someone to rescue me.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring DJ or producer, what would it be?

The best advice I have been given is to think positive and go with your heart. But if you really want to be a successful DJ you must be prepared for long hours, being very tired, and lots of dedication.

With the ‘Helter Skelter’ albums being so popular, there are more and more people getting into clubbing. What would be your one piece of advice to somebody going to their first rave?

Go with an open mind, don’t go too mental as it’s your first time, and make sure you have lots of fun!
