Rodi Styles gets Contagious

Over the past couple of years Rodi Style has emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the most respected and well loved DJs in the hard dance scene. After pipping more established UK artists to the coveted title of ‘Best New Comer’ at the recent Hard Dance Awards, its plain to see why the pocket sized Canadian is causing such a stir!
Booked to play the up-coming Contagious Bouncing Ball at Club Ice, Westbury on June 6th, we interrupted his busy day to find out what makes Rodi tick!
Good Afternoon dude, hows it going? For those of us that have been hiding under a rock for the past couple of years, who is Rodi Style and what are you all about?
Hello Kieron, things are good and it’s nice and sunny out! To answer your question, “Rodi Style” is the stage name for my hard house act and I am all about having a good time and trying to make my performance as interesting as possible!
It was Storm Promoter Garbo who originally put faith in your skills and brought you over to the UK, did you think that it would lead to being signed to S62/tidy and following that so closely with the HDA award?
I never imagined I would sign to Tidy let alone win the HDA award. Playing in the UK was always a goal of mine so I was already over the moon about being able to perform in the UK and it’s still surreal how everything else followed. I really do owe it to Garbo and a few others (Colin & Yojo at Cyberkitten and Neil at A+E) for taking a chance with a lesser known international.
You have recently made the decision to move to the UK, was it an easy choice? How are you finding the change of scenery?
The choice itself was easy, there is no other place in the world where hard dance is as big and it was the logical step to take if I was to commit to my music career. Leaving everyone behind was difficult though, I miss everyone so very much and it does get lonely here some days.
If I’m completely honest, living in the UK’s got it’s up and downs. The incredible music scene and nightlife is a huge bonus to living in the UK but the cost of living is near double what it is in Canada. Did you know that a McDonalds meal in Canada would only cost the equivalent of about £1.50? It was shocking paying £5 for a Burger King meal here. That’s about C$12 ! I could get 3 Burger King meals in Canada for that price! Yikes!
What is the best gig you have played in the UK up till now?
That’s really tough but I’d have to say Storm NYE. The main room was rammed and the crowd was so into the music. I’ve always had an amazing time at the Tidy Weekenders though. It’s like being part of a big family, a big happy hard dance family.
Summit in London was really fun as well! Great atmosphere and a really up for it crowd, I really enjoyed myself there!
Contagious has only recently started to do events, what have you heard about them so far and the direction they are aiming to take the brand?
From what I’ve seen and heard, they certainly seem like a very dedicated brand and I’m expecting a very well decorated party with lots of focus on bringing a truly unique experience. I think their clothing line is really funky and I’m looking forward to seeing how their creativity expands to events!
You have several productions under your belt already, including a forthcoming release on Tidy. What has been your biggest success to date?
Definitely Pistol Packing. There hasn’t been a single gig that I can remember where somebody hasn’t asked me to play it. It also is the most well received tune in my arsenal and one of two tunes that I’ve done an update of because I’ve flogged the original like nobody’s business.
You have been asked to mix one of the disks for the next chapter in Tidy’s Music For A Harder Generation Series alongside Andy Whitby, have you started to put that together and what can we expect from your mix?
I’ve actually finished my CD already and it’s gone to Sam for mastering and what not but I’m super happy with it. Hmm what to expect... tricks and scratching but very tastefully done so as to not ruin the listening experience! My CD also progresses from some of the groovier material into the more full on peak time stuff so there’s a nice flow rather than thrap-thrap from start to finish.
You have quickly become recognised for your no-nonsense, technical wizardry and skills behind the decks, what first made you decide to learn these skills? Do you find that this has helped your meteoric rise?
Pretty much the moment I started playing I knew I didn’t want to be one of those DJs that stood around doing nothing and looking bored. Also over the years I’ve been fortunate to gather influences from DJs I’ve seen play live and develop my own style. I really think this is a really large portion of my “rise” so to speak as it provides something a little bit “out of the norm” for a DJ set. I really don’t think I would be where I am today if I just mixed from track to track.
You have been booked to play a Tidy classic set at the Bouncing Ball on June 6th. It’s not what we would normally associate with you musically, so what can we expect from you?
Plenty of upbeat and fun music! It’s a great honour to represent Tidy by doing a showcase of their classic material, especially since I grew up listening to a lot of these tracks so I’m really looking forward to putting my own little spin on things.
Now that you have spent a little time in the UK, what DJ’s have caught your eye?
I’ve been listening to a few of Bryn Whiting’s demos and I’ve been impressed with the flow and transitions of his mixes. They work very seamlessly and I can see big things coming for him. Also, not exactly a new name by any means, but Amber D is a DJ that deserves every success that she’s received. She’s got a lot of drive and passion for the music as well as a really great stage presence, solid mixing and she even spices things up with the odd trick here and there.
As for technical DJs on the market, I would highly recommend Andy K from up North. His scratching is incredible and he’s constantly pushing the boundaries of a regular hard dance set with 3 deck mixing and other shenanigans.
What can we expect from you in the future, production wise, gig wise, etc?.
This year is shaping up to be amazing and during the downtime when I’m not playing out, I’ll have my head down and working on music. I’ve also got a few exciting collaborations coming up with artists I look up to (Paul Maddox, BK, Digital Kid) and it’ll be a fun time throwing ideas around!
Many thanks for your time Rodi.
Not a problem it was my pleasure!
You can catch Rodi’s explosive Tidy classic set at the forthcoming Contagious Bouncing Ball at Club Ice, Westbury on Friday June 6th.

Listen up soldiers, the biggest and best ball this year has just been announced. This time the Sexy Contagious Army dons their cammo outfits and polishes their loaded weapons to bring you the Bouncing Ball.
Following hot on the heels of the hugely successful Masked Ball, the Contagious Team deliver a truly explosive line up for Friday June 4th at Club Ice, Westbury. Continuously pushing back the fronts of Hard House, it is clear to see why Contagious Events are becoming a highlight in any clubbers diary.

Then it’s time for the back to back battle royales, who is best? Girls or Boys? North v South? tidy v Frantic? Contagious v Awsum? Well, Contagious lets you decide, the Gorgeous Cally Gage faces up against Northern Party Boys, The Tidy DJ’s who are fast emerging as the hottest acts from the tidy stables for a 2 hour exclusive North v South civil war and Caz Wood v Klubfiller in a Contagious v Awsum dog fight. After the Contagious Room at Tidy Weekender 12 was a lock out for favourites JP & Jukesy’s TW5 Bounce Classic Set it seemed only right to ask them back to do it again after so many of you missed out! This time there will be NO disappointment!
Headlining Room 2 is the winner of the HDA "Best Newcomer 2007" award Rodi Style will be using his technical wizardry to bring an explosive tidy classics set like none before.
