Scott Attrill talks to us about 'The Music Journal'

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 17-11-08 15:30

Hailed as the King of the hard house scene, Scott Attrill’s impressive career has been going from strength to strength since the age of 13. An international DJ, a respected producer, and co-label owner of the monster Riot! and Traffic Recordings, it’s no wonder he is at the top of his game. Releasing his own album this year, with his label now launching a new concept album; The Music Journal, Scott is living proof that the hard house scene is alive and well and stronger than ever!

Hi Scott! Where are you right now and what have you been up to today?

Today I have been checking through a new album mix I have done for Filthy House For Dirty Stopouts - Part 2 that’s due out early next year, its almost finished so just getting the final touches right.

Your label Traffic Records has recently merged with the huge Riot! Recordings - both of them massive dance labels in their own right - so now they have joined forces can we expect bigger and better things?

Yes, we merged the labels about a year back and they have both really stepped up a gear. We have released both my artist album Bass Junkie & BK’s project The Nu Wave plus Riot in Ibiza 2008 on Riot alongside some top releases, Traffic also had the Ibiza smash 28 Tracks Later as well as more single releases from the likes of Yoji, Anne Savage, myself and others so its been a great year for both labels.

The Music Journal – Part 1 is a new concept that you guys are launching – can you tell us a bit more about it?

The Music Journal will be presented every two or three months featuring the main releases from Riot! & Traffic, there will also be a bonus DJ mix with each issue and also a producer sample pack so there really is something for everyone.

Cally Gage has mixed CD two – how did this come about?

We had a shortlist of artists we wanted to do the first ever mix and Cally was the one we picked as she has been on fire this year, she also features as an artist with a single collaboration with BK in the singles selection so it was good to tie it all in together.

I-DJ magazine dubbed you as ‘The new king of hard dance”, quite an achievement. What are your thoughts on the hard dance scene at the minute?

The scene is strong at the moment and has been going in the right direction for sure. There are a lot of artist’s fusing different styles & sounds which is exciting as it keeps the music fresh and interesting, the DJ gigs this year have also been rocking so the future looks very good.

What has been the strangest request you have received when DJing?

To play an R&B record- what was that about!?!

Tell us a little bit about your studio set up?

I actually use quite a few studios and all have different set ups as well as programs and outboard equipment. The Riot! studio’s in London have Makkie mixing desks, The Virus, Supernova, JP 8080, but to be honest most things come from the plug in’s, things like Massive and Nexus, all which produce great sounds.

You began DJing at the tender age of 13, so obviously music has been your first love, but what asides from DJing and producing do you do when you have any spare time?

What spare time I do have I usually spend with my family or watch a movie. I am pretty competitive on the Nintendo Wii too, its great fun.

You have played in all four corners of the world; do you have a favourite place to DJ?

It would have to be Ibiza, the vibe of the Island is amazing and I love to play there, its special.

Does anything or anyone influence you when you’re producing your music?

I am influenced by all kinds of music and artists, if I like something from a drum & bass track it will inspire ideas for a hard dance record. I’m very open to all kinds of music so that’s really helped me a lot with my productions.

Finally what does 2009 hold for you?

Next year will be more of the same - we are holding another Riot! party at The End in January, it will actually be the last ever Sunday event at the venue before it closes so looking forward to that. The event will also be the launch party for ‘Filthy House For Dirty Stopouts 2’ double album mixed by myself and BK so it’s going to kick start the year with a mighty bang. We will also be working on more music journals, Riot! In Ibiza 2009 as well as all my DJing and productions.

Riot! & Traffic presents 'The Music Journal' - out now and available from Zavvi, Riot Online Store and HMV.com.
