Chris Unknown Goes Bonkers!

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 22-05-09 10:31

Hardcore producer and DJ Chris Unknown has been a regular at big raves and parties across the UK and around the world for over a decade. From Slammin Vinyl and Hardcore Heaven to Hardcore Til I Die, Chris has done them all, while his record label Quosh Records, born out his famous partnership with DJ Sy, boasts an impressive discography of over 90 releases. Now on board with DJs Hixxy and Sharky for the next instalment of the legendary Bonkers series ‘The Original Hardcore,’ we catch up with Chris Unknown to discuss all things Bonkers!

How would you introduce yourself to someone that has never heard of you?

Hi, I’m Chris. Nice to meet you! I’m a hardcore DJ and have been for 15 years!

What or who influenced you to choose a career in music?

I have had lots of influences over the years from mainstream pop to commercial dance and, of course, early rave. I think going to raves in the early nineties was the main thing that got me into DJing, which got me into producing. Nowadays I get influences from all types of music, I think with current hardcore being more song based now you can draw inspiration from all kinds of musical genres.

Your debut mix on the Bonkers series is out next month, how did it come about? Was it difficult deciding on the track listing?

I have had many tracks on the Bonkers albums over the years especially when my partner in crime DJ Sy was mixing them. I guess it came about through a lot of hard work in the studio and DJing, this can help you get noticed and make record companies sit up and take notice. I know Hixxy was keen to get me on board, as he likes what I do at the moment. Tracklists are always hard to compile, as there is a wealth of material and not that many spaces. I always try and be true to my beliefs, i.e., I only put tracks on a mix that I DJ in the clubs, that way it is a good reflection as me as an artist.

Hixxy & Sharkey have mixed the other two CDs – do you know them and if so, any funny stories to report?!

Yeah I’ve known both of them for what seems like forever! I don’t see Sharkey that much, only when we bump into each other at clubs, but I spend many a lonely hour on the phone to Hixxy at the weekends as we travel from club to club - of course I have funny stories but that just wouldn’t be proper to spill!

What’s your fail-safe track guaranteed to get the crowd going bonkers?

At the moment the biggest track for me is a track called Alabama by The Rampant DJs (not to be mistaken with rabbits!). It is a track we signed to our label and remixed it into our style and it is a big, big track right now.

Do you think the Hardcore scene is healthy at present? Any new faces that we should watch out for?

I think the scene is really strong right now, primarily because there is a good amount of DJs & producers doing good things and keeping the scene fresh, it helps to keep people interested.

Where has been the best and worst place you’ve played at?

I have DJed at some really awful places, especially in the early 90’s! You used to get to some clubs and the set up would be terrible, there would be no one there, the promoter would go missing and you would have driven three hours to not get paid! I’ve also been lucky enough to experience some real highs, I played in Sydney a couple of years ago and that was crazy, I didn’t know what to expect but was greeted by nearly 10,000 ravers going mental, that was great. New Years Eve 2008 was really good too; I played up to the midnight hour in the main room at the NEC for Slammin Vinyl.

A couple of your own tracks are featured in the mix. Any new tracks on the horizon that you want to tell us about?

As I mentioned earlier, Alabama is a biggie, but there are also tracks I’m putting together with Re-Con and Darren Styles that are coming on quite nicely so watch this space.

Have you got any DJ / Producer related pet hates?

From a DJ perspective, I really hate having a poor set up, I’m known as a scratch DJ and with the current state of play regarding CD decks, it is becoming more and more common that clubs don’t have vinyl turntables, not ideal when you need them to scratch.

Producer pet hates are probably just when your PC crashes right at the point when you have done something really cool and you can’t remember what you did!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

WORLD DOMINATION!
