Are you ready for Dr. Lektroluv? Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 04-11-09 09:58 What began as a practical joke has seen Dr Lektroluv become one of Europe’s leading purveyors of the electro sound. His performances always shrouded in a green veil of mystery the Dr. makes his first performance this Friday at The Gallery at Ministry Of Sound. Making his debut on Belgium’s dance scene in 2002 with the release of his first mix album The New Preskription’s Of Dr. Lektroluv an album that featured a less than obvious mixture of electro and techno the Dr. soon became a firm favourite on the underground scene. Nine mix albums later, a residency at one of the countries leading electro clubs Body To Body as well as performances at some of Europe’s leading clubs and festivals such as I Love Techno, Now & Wow, Awakenings, Dance Valley, Extrema Outdoor and Rock Wercheter, the Dr. has also recently launched his own imprint Lektroluv which has featured releases from The Subs, Mason, Sound Of Stereo and Williams amongst others. The Dr. is fast gaining pace as one of the biggest stars on the European scene. We caught up with Dr Lektroluv whilst travelling between gigs to get the low down on what to expect from his performance this weekend. For those who don’t know please give us a brief introduction to Dr Lektroluv and your work? Dr Lektroluv: I left my laboratory to heal the world some nine years ago. What originally started as a crazy idea for a few parties and to promote my compilations has seen me became a highly demanded person as a DJ. By regularly releasing electro compilations that introduce future talents combined with electro classics, I have created a big following in the Benelux who wanted to hear the music where it is at its best, the dancefloor! So far the story has been told in seven compilations of which each one has had a particular touch with a wide range of electronic dance music for example; italo, 80’s, Detroit electro and so on. After that I released three mix albums in collaboration with Belgium and Holland’s biggest festivals such as Extrema, Pukkelpop and Rock Werchter. This is your debut at The Gallery – what have you heard about this club and what can clubbers expect? The name has been around for a while and I am proud to make my debut there. I’ve visited the club long time ago, as a clubber so to be finally behind the decks is a great feeling. Maybe my music will be a bit different to what clubbers are used to hear every week but I will try to make it a memorable night! You’re resident at Belgium’s Culture Club – can you tell us about the event? I was resident at the Body To Body parties (actually my first gig was the first Body To Body party) at Culture Club. These night were held bimonthly and were showing the future about electromusic, introducing and inviting great artists such as Tiga, Digitalism, Justice, Miss Kittin, Boys Noize and more. You’ve got your own label Lektroluv, what’s happening here and what’s the plan? After DJing for a while I was approached by many artists handing over demo’s to play out and as the Dr was created to support and promote this music I felt an obligation to take it a step further by launching a label. I don’t want to release just 12 inches from various artists all the time but want to be part of the whole set up and progression of these talents. So next to releases from Mason, Michoacan, DJ Kaos and Williams I work together with exclusive artists such as The Subs, Mr Magnetik, Ampersand and Sound Of Stereo. The Subs have released a debut album and are building their strong live reputation on an international level. Remixes from their work has been done by Yuksek and Brodinksi, Jokers of The Scene, Shinichi Osawa, Joe and Will Ask and Zodiac Cartel, while they touched the music from Mason, Alex Gopher, Aston Shuffle and more recently La Roux. Sound of Stereo have participated on an album track for The Bloody Beetroots and are supported by all major DJs in the electro and fidget house scene. This year I have also released the Crookers Mix Album made especially for the I Love Techno event. More info on the label can be found at www.lektroluv.be Both Holland and Belgium have some of the biggest and best techno parties and festivals – of which you play regularly – which is your favourite? Extrema Outdoor in Holland was a special one as they gave me a nice spot on the main stage and the opportunity to release my first mix album recorded live at the event. Next to the massive amount of quality dance festivals in the Benelux, rock festivals over here are introducing more and more DJs. Playing before/after ‘legends’ such as Beastie Boys, Bruce Springsteen, The Killers, Simple Minds and Blondie is always an experience! Why the mask – do you ever plan to reveal your true identity? I don’t think the identity behind the mask is important. It sounds like a contradiction but the mask was meant not to be part of any prejudice of who was playing the music. What are you up to in the studio at present? As I am playing around quite a lot there’s no time for studio sessions. Would love to do but I have to meet the right production partner, in the meantime I’d rather promote and help those who are working hard producing music. Which artists are inspiring you right now? Besides the Lektroluv roster, other artists who inspire me are Alex Gopher, Etienne de Crecy, Boys Noize, Jack Beats, Bloody Beetroots, Vitalic, Proxy and beyond!! What does 2010 hold in store for the Dr? A busy tour schedule and some improvement on the ‘live’ side of the sets, spreading the electro virus around the world!
