Flip-Flop: More than just beach wear.

Flip-Flop, John and Chris are two young London based producers who have been tearing up many a psychedelic dance floor for some time now. With the new single ‘The Burn’ due for imminent release on Alchemy Records, we thought it was about time we caught up with these guys to find out a bit more about them.
You’ve been friends since you were young, but where & how did the two of you actually meet?
We met at the tender age of 6 at school in London where we were both in the same class. In fact, now you mention it our friendship was sealed when we found ourselves standing outside the headmaster’s office hand cuffed together!
Can you remember the first record you bought? What was it?
John: One of the first records I bought was called, "Jive Bunny".
Chris: Peter Gabriel – Sledge Hammer.
Having said that, a lot of our early inspiration came from Prince. He will no doubt continue to inspire us forever more!
When did you both start getting into trance music and at what point did you decide to produce your own music?
We started listening to Trance at around the age of 16 and after a few years of going to parties and Festivals we realized we had something to say.
What is your inspiration for creating a track?
Inspiration can come from many things and often can come from no where. We try hard to establish a theme or concept before we actually sit down. Once we have an idea we’ll start playing around with synths and samples and before you know it out of nowhere something grabs us and we’re off!
Good vibes in the studio is crucial.
Describe your sound in three words.
Sex, Drugs, Rock-n-roll.
Do you have a particular routine when making a track?
It can be easy to slip into a routine when working on a song, but we try our best not to. We’re constantly fine-tuning the way we work but at the same time we try and mix it up as much as possible. For us the Groove is extremely important, so this often sets the scene...
Who are your biggest influences and favourite artists?
In the beginning artists such as Atmos, X-dream, Sub 6 & domestic all had big impacts on us, but as we move forward our influences are coming from other genres. We both love the Trance groove and the way it captivates a dance floor, but for the music/content on top we tend to seek inspiration from other genres of electronic music.
You’re signed to the highly respected label Alchemy Records. How did this change your career?
Signing with Alchemy was a real honor. It has been a beacon of quality throughout the years so we’re very happy to be part of the team.
What’s your favorite piece of equipment in the studio? & what’s the piece you couldn’t live without?
Favorite piece: Native instrument’s Massive.
Couldn't live without: It’s a tie between our Banjo and the miniature rain-stick.
What are the pros & cons of working together? Have you ever worked separately?
Working in a pair is a special experience. The phrase 'Two minds is better than one' comes to mind. Although it’s not necessarily 'better', it certainly creates more of a dialogue when writing and what comes out is always different from what we would produce by ourselves.
We both have our own projects that we work on separately and this has always been the case. This gives us time to experiment with new ideas, so when we meet in the Flip-Flop studio its almost a competition to show off who's learned something new. This is a major contributing factor to our sound.
What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry?
We’re clearly in a new era. Although we are constantly surrounded by negative discussions in terms of the sales of music, when it comes to the actual music this is an incredible moment to be in! Throughout all genres the caliber is so high, which as producers is incredibly inspiring.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Releasing our First Album 'Floppy Drive' was a real moment for us. Its impossible to isolate one moment as being a highlight as every studio moment and gig is special in its own right but if we had to focus on a few other moments we would say.:The first Glade Festival we played at, Boom 2010 and our new EP which is out now!
In the past you’ve worked with some great artists including Headroom, who would you like to collaborate with next?
Our great friend Matt Allaby is one artist who we feel brings true originalitiy to a scene littered with copy cats and uninspiring music, so he's be up there...
What plans for the future do you have?
We wanted to let our First Album Floppy Drive breathe and have its time, but now the dust has settled we've begun work on our new Album which is yet to be named but will be with you soon.
