Pharmacy: Phase One Trance Mission

Ultra-cool US label Pharmacy Music is entering a new phase in its evolution. As well as sporting a newly designed logo, the label is bringing out a compilation; the first mixed by Christopher Lawrence. For those who don't know the label, Pharmacy Music is a trance label based in the United States. It is run by Christopher Lawrence who is both a US DanceStar Award winner and won “Best American DJ” at the Winter Music Conference's IDMAs.
What of the label itself? Well, its roster is impressive. At present, it includes the likes of Magnus, Sean J Morris, Cowboy Mike and Fergie & Sadrian. It also includes Steve Birch and John '00' Fleming. As a result, the label's audio output is trance; mainly full-on trance with a hint of psy and progressive thrown in for good measure. With support coming from the leading lights in the trance world such as Paul Van Dyk, Sean Tyas, M.I.K.E. and more, its fair to say that Pharmacy's remit of producing trance of the highest possible calibre is holding true. There's a lot to choose from from a label that has been active since its conception and humble beginnings; particularly in a country that has just recently embraced trance music.
Which brings us to the main gist of why we're here; indeed the main focus of the feature. The compilation is called Pharmancy: Phase One and contains work from the label's roster including the artists previously mentioned as well as other, less well-known producers. Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, I give to you, Christopher Lawrence.
Hi Chris. Firstly, how are things going right now in the world of Pharmacy?
Things are going brilliantly, thanks. I am very proud of the talented artists on the label. Each of them has their unique sound that complements the overall sound of the label. We have ramped up the Pharmacy release schedule so that we are now releasing two tracks a month. There is a lot of momentum behind the label now. We've recently started doing label nights and they've done incredibly well. We're planning on doing more in 2012.
For those who don't know about the label, when was it formed?
The first track released on Pharmacy Music was in 2008. It was a collaboration between John '00' Fleming and myself titled 'Beyond the Limit'. The label was developed as an outlet for my own productions as well as those by newer artists. When touring, I would come across producers that that were making great underground trance music but which wasn't being released anywhere. I was having a hard time finding the style of music that I wanted to play so the best thing to do was create a label dedicated to the sound that I liked. Fortunately, there seem to be a lot of other people that like the Pharmacy sound!
How has trance music evolved in the US?
Trance has traditionally been a fairly underground sound in the States. Trance was always the most popular sound at raves or festivals but house and progressive dominated the clubs. Lately, trance has gotten a bad name because of the glut of commercial pop dance music that is being released under the genre of trance but, which is in reality, the furthest removed from trance. That is why our motto at Pharmacy Music is “You’ll never be embarrassed to admit that you like our trance”.
There's a lot of talented producers on the roster e.g. John '00' Fleming, Magnus, Sean J Morris etc. Who's impressed you most of all with their material?
John '00' Fleming is one of my all time favorite DJs and producers so I am a fan of anything he does but I am really liking all of the music that is coming out on Pharmacy. There have been some stand out releases this year by newcomers Fergie & Sadrian and Gian Carlo.
Lets talk a bit about the album now. Is this Pharmacy's first compilation album? What was the inspiration behind its conception?
Phase 1 is the first compilation for the label and it is based on the releases up to this point. It was actually a fan of the label that came up with the idea. She said that since i was playing so many of the Pharmacy tracks in my set and that they were her favorites I should make put out a mix. I thought is was a great idea. My sets are made up of Pharmacy tracks and I thought that it was a great way to showcase the talent that we have on the label. I had so many good tracks to work with that it was hard to fit them all on. As I said, Phase 1 is the first, but we are looking at releasing a series of CDs for each phase of the label. Each compilation in the series will be mixed by a different artist on the label which will make it exciting.
What does the future hold for Pharmacy Music? Will we be seeing any artist albums?
We plan on continuing to add new artists to our roster and keep releasing quality trance. There are some artist albums in the works from Sean J Morris and Jonathan Allyn. I am also finishing up my new art it album which will be released on Pharmacy in 2012. In fact 2012 is set to be our best year yet!
Hope the album does well and thanks for speaking to HarderFaster. Pharmacy Phase 1 is out now.
