Anton Maiko – aka Mindwave – goes deep with Iono Black

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 16-05-18 11:49

Iono-Music is one of the biggest psychedelic trance labels in the psy trance scene and has been so, continually, for the last 13 years. Its sound, predominantly psychedelic – progressive – spiritual – hypnotic – has been iconic; releasing tracks from some of the most legendary artists in the scene.

Now Iono have launched a sister label – Iono Black – which will be an outlet for a lower bpm and diverse styles/genres from progressive house through to techno and everything in between. I caught up with Anton Maiko – Head of A&R from the label for a bite-size insight into this exciting new venture.

Firstly – please tell us the trigger for starting up a second label?

We came with the idea to expand Iono Music by opening a sub label that will focus more on the deeper side of electronic music. We are based in Berlin and we are big fans of techno and the progressive house sound too, next to our main genre of psychedelic trance of course!!!

Also, I have a side project under my real name Anton Maiko, where I produce deeper and more emotional tunes.

What is the concept behind the idea for a second label? I know the thinking is a slower bpm and style of electronic music, but what else will separate it from Iono Music?

At the moment, Iono Music is growing every day and become even more popular and established. It’s really busy releasing multiple quality productions every week; and so we decided to create something new and fresh – a new label to give artists a new platform for a lower bpm style, but utilising the power and the knowledge of Iono Music. In general, the main core difference will be the music styles.

Are there any key features that will remain the same as Iono Music, as you are still part of the same brand?

One of our main key features will be the musical quality, the arrangements and the production of the tracks, as we are focused on releasing only the best. The tracks need to have an effect on us or an entry to our soul, moving into the hypnotic, drifting, spiritual and groovy vibe!

You are working with Matthias Sperlich (Iono Music) on Iono Black. Tell us about your individual roles and how you will bring this together as a team?

Matthias is the Head of Iono Music and he basically runs and control all departments, along with his helpers! From management, bookings, releases, contracts etc. my role is to take care of Iono Black by choosing the tracks, contacting the artists and doing promotions, as well as any social media plans.

I'm new to all this, but Matthias is a great teacher and he helps me a lot whenever I need it. I’m confident that together we will take Iono Black to the top!

What are you looking for in the tracks you sign? What makes a ‘top’ track for you?

We are looking for deep, atmospheric and groovy tracks which fall into the techno and progressive house kinda sound. We want interesting tracks that tell the listener a story, that take you to places… tracks that makes your soul shine and dance.

Are there any big ‘NO NOs’ for you when signing music?

Yes – boring and sleepy sounding tracks. They need to come alive and have energy.

So far, you’ve had three releases on Iono Black – tell us about them.

Well the début release was by myself and it was called ‘Rising’. It's a two-track single with very deep, emotional sounds.

The second release is by the Russian producer Slam Duck, with a great two single release called ‘Rara Avis’. This has a really deep groovy, trancey sound.

The third one is by the Italian producer and DJ Matteo Monero and is called ‘Forma Nouva’. It has a very techy kinda sound. I really really like this release. In fact, I think they're all really high quality.

Where do you hope to see the label in a year from now?

I really hope to see that Iono Black has grown and evolved into a highly successful and trusted label. I hope that it grows greater with every new release and that this basis will go on to form the Iono Black sound.

Anton, thanks for taking the time to do this piece. Best of luck with this exciting new project!
