DJ Tristan needs no introductions, but I will anyway :-) Having entered the Psy-Trance scene over 25 years ago, his music, energy and spirit is still as spellbinding as ever! With his powerful driving beats, infectious smile and pure dedication to the scene, it’s no surprise that he still continues to wow crowds, captivate audiences and hypnotise the masses with his magical musical madness! Of course, he’s in particularly high demand during festival season but we were lucky enough to grab the Godfather of Psy-Trance for a ‘short & sweet’ catch up between gigs!
Hey Tristan! The last time I actually interviewed you was back in 2010! What’s new? What would you list as significant milestones/events that have occurred in recent years?
Personally - 2 albums, one solo, one collab as Killerwatts, both released on Nano.
Generally - a complete revolution of the psychedelic scene stemming from a massive renaissance of the party scene in Goa. It’s been an amazing cycle of events that is reflected in the sheer size, energy and exposure of the Psytrance culture globally.
It seems over the last 8 years you’ve got busier and busier - jet setting all over the Globe, and you spend a lot of time in Goa. Do you get much down time? When you do, how do you spend it? What other styles of music do you like, apart from psy-trance?
I have made it an integral part of my and my family’s life to spend the season in Goa each year from December to April. That has been the antidote to urban western living and loads of fun too!
I listen to lots of different music, my particular favourite is psychedelic folk and rock of the 1970’s - everything from Pink Floyd to Neil Young. I love the suggestion functions of Spotify and YouTube which can throw in different choices and introduce me to something new as well.
Do you feel you have changed much over the last decade, as a person and as an artist? Do you feel your sound has changed over the years? What different techniques/tricks/equipment do you now use in the studio?
I moved out of London 2 years ago which has been a huge change in my life. I’m loving the forest, the space (physical and psychological) and spending more time in nature. That’s been a big influence on every aspect of my life. Musically my sound has definitely evolved, but the essence hasn’t changed from the very early days since I discovered this amazing culture. The experience I try to create for people is the same one I had when my mind was blown in Goa in 1993! My tool of choice is Ableton, that has given me the freedom to achieve my goals much more fluently. Improved production is another area I have really been focusing on for a few years and it seems to be paying off.
What do you think makes you a successful artist? What qualities do you and your peers possess that resonate with the audiences so much?
Passion, persistence, authenticity. Love what you do and it can be quite infectious!
You have been at the top of your game for a while now; where do you see yourself going from here? What upcoming plans do you have in the pipeline?
Onwards and upwards I hope. I’m in this for the long haul. Maybe write another solo album and keep blasting around the planet!
You’re playing Goa Cream in the UK this Summer. What kind of prep do you do for your sets and what are you looking forward to the most about this gig?
I don’t prep per se for the set. I have my music on my laptop which is potentially many hours. I turn up at the event and play according to how I feel it. Flexibility keeps it enjoyable and contemporary for me.
This is my first Goa Cream but I know it’s an amazing party with a True Spirit. It will have all the ingredients for a proper Uk psychedelic stomper. Can’t wait...
If you had to describe the Psy-Trance scene to someone who knew nothing about it, how would you describe it?
Wild and Free. An opportunity to experience the cosmic and unexplored parts of your mind...
Tristan - a very big thank you for giving us your time in this interview! Looking forward to hearing you at the Goa Cream Festival on the 14th September (if not before)! xx
Always my pleasure Jess! Big hugs xxx
