I have been a great fan of Neo and Farina for some time now - they have done countless remixes for Platipus rcords, as well as one original release for them - and here is they're (I think) 3rd solo release, backed with a remix from overnight trance superstars, DJ Precision, M.I.D.O.R & Six4Eight of Somatic Sense fame. Once again, I purchaed this record "blind" purely on the strength of the producers, and, I am happy to say, I was not disappointed.....
Side A sees the original mix, and an absolute stormer it is too. Things kick off nicely with a good solid kick drum which is a dream to mix, and some interesting gallopy percussion, before a subtle little acid line is filtered in to give the intro some beef, a couple more layers of percussion come in, then after 4 loops the bassline is introduced. Anybody who is familiar with Neo and Farina's work will know what I mean when I say that they use this fantastic "grumbling" bassline that is quite proggy and groovy, but still fairly tough - this is what is known in my book as "proper trance".
The tune is quite progressive in its approach, adding in layers of percussion, fx, and some eerie sounding pads to good effect, creating quite a sinister sound whilst still being uplifting - the word that springs to mind when asked to describe this track is "regal" - listen to it and you will know what I mean. The track continues to build to the first break, bringing in little chord stabs that provide quite a contast to the eerie build up. The break cuts things down to beats and filters the main melody out and then back in again, adding new layers of the synth and sub-bass until the melody reaches its climax and the track kicks back in again. The melody in the first break, is not ridiculously euphoric like say, Matt Silver + Tony Burt - Ultimate Wave, but is a bit more subtle, before adding some extra notes in the second break which will have the crowd going mental.
On the B-Side then, we have the DJ Precision, M.I.D.O.R & Six4Eight remix for Somatic Sense. Fans of their previous tracks will instantly recognise the crisp kick drum and percussion which is slightly more sparse than in the original mix. A four loop intro leads into quite a groovy, proggy sounding bassline, which couple with the sparse percussion gives a nice minimal yet warm feeling to proceedings. A much more subtle approach has been opted for here, with a very gentle feel to the FX and chords used. The breakdown is a very blissed out affair, quite downbeat and a nice alternative from the original mix. One interesting touch to this track is that the breakdown ends when the bass and kick come back in, which is a slight deviation from the norm, and has the effect IMO of making this a high quality filler track, or an ideal track for a warm up set. However, Trance dj's who prefer the lighter, proggier end of things will be able to play this as a peak time track without any problems
Overall then, a top quality release, and 2 very different mixes which makes a nice change. I personally prefer the original mix, but both are high quality slabs up uplifting trance which should find favour with most trance DJ's
