If you’re not familiar with the sample “Move your body higher, higher
hi-hi-higher”, you’re either too young to drink or so drug addled that
you’re probably reading this review from some kind of institution. This
sample is a classic. There’s no doubt about that. I guess the question
is, have Plastic Dreams added any value beyond this in their latest set of
mixes?
Far from the avant-garde feel of the original when it broke, in 1987/88 (at
least it was around then, from what I remember!), these mixes have a
distinctly mainstream feel to them. Dance music has moved on an incredible
journey since the late Eighties and subsequently the current cultural
context is very different to what it was then.
Remixes of old classic tunes tend to work to the rather obvious format of
taking the original hook then beefing up the bass-line or adding some kind
of breakbeat to make it sound ruffer and tuffer. However in this instance
Plastic Dreams have kept their treatment more subtle.
Overall, I think this works well. I think the adage, “If it ain’t broke,
don’t fix it” certainly applies. The guys have managed to raise the timbre
of track to enable it to slip into a set quite nicely thank you, without
losing the charm of the original. The 3rd Mix by the Hoxton Whores is
definitely my favourite as I think it feels most like the track has been
evolved. I really like the acidy bassline that they’ve added and this
darkness balances the slight cheesiness of the vocal. For me the other 2
are more like re-instrumentalised versions of the original than a new
track.
In honesty, I think I still prefer the original, but I’d play this. It
would certainly raise a smile or two around the room.

I like the Hoxton Whores. Their remix of Faithless was ace.
