Label: Azuli
Format: CD-R
Genre: House

First of all, can I say that ever since Azuli started their black label and
released "He's not in" (from the Smirnoff Ice ad), it has become rather a
favourite label of mine, so please excuse any slight prejudice. Whether or
not I'd like this record any less if it was on a different label I don't
know, but it's certainly a subject to which I give some thought on
occasion.

I like this track. It reminds me of a lot of early 90's house bits
(Glo-worm - I lift my cup type era). It's got one of those strong, serious
black preacher-man type vocals in it. However rather than the tinny sounds
of the 90's to accompany it, where bassline meant no more than a "vvvvom"
sound on every beat in the drum pattern, this track piles in with a much
fatter 'noughties' electro-filtered, jump-up funky house-style riff down
below. What you get is a track with some classic attributes in a
contemporary style. The 90's feel of the vocal, for me brings a slight
whiff of fromage to the party and this is exacerbated slightly by a few
over-used sound-effects and crescendo patterns, however the feel-good
factor within the record means that the smell is more liked deep-fried
camembert than gorgonzola.

There are 3 mixes on this single. However it's got to be the vocal version
for me. The bassline is good and I like it a lot, don't get me wrong, but
with the ostinato effect created by the vocal line means that the track
lacks sufficient depth without it (although the instrumental versions could
work as filler tunes in a DJ mix set).
