As far as EPs go when it comes to releasing a new album, most labels will release one, or at a push, possibly two. The guys at Passenger Records, however, seem to have gone EP crazy for the release Friction’s This Way Up album.
This, the fifth EP from the album, comes in the shape of tracks by Dopamine & Backdraft.
Dopamine – Flapjack
First up we have Dopamine’s “FlapJack”, a smooth and quite dark bass heavy track with a crisp beat and very cool synths running it. I’ll be honest, it took me a few listens to get into this tune but when I did, I really enjoyed the dark and atmospheric qualities of it.
Unlike Dopamine’s “Hold You”, “Flapjack” won’t be winning Breakspoll’s best single award but it is a very solid tune that would be equally at home on a breaks or an upbeat Prog dance floor. Definitely one to keep in your record bag for when you need to build the night up.
Backdraft – Freeze Dried
On the Filpside with have “Freeze Dried” by Backdraft, While Flapjack took a while to grow on me, Freeze Dried hooked me straight away. A wicked mixture of bass and snare kicks and beats coupled with dramatic synths. All this builds up to quite a dark breakdown with undertones of the atmospheric music you used to get in 80’s shows like Knight Rider or Airwolf. I doubt it was the image Backdraft was going for, but hey it works for me .. Top stuff indeed
Overall this EP provided 2 very good tunes and as an appetiser for “This Way up”, it more than does the job. Speaking of the Album, with tunes from the likes of Aquasky, Micah, Tom Real & Rouge Element as well as these two from Dopamine and Backdraft, I’m certainly looking forward to getting my hands on a copy
