Label: Sound of Habib Format: 12" Vinyl Genre: Breaks/Dubstep
Canberra’s Karton are at the controls for Sound of Habib’s latest offering, with ‘Spacetrip 82’.
Coming in 3 different flavours with Beta and Hellfire Machina stepping up for remix duties, the original mix, while nothing groundbreaking is a crowd-friendly breaks number with a pleasant vocal (can’t quite place where it’s from, however), the requisite pumped electro b-line tempered by some almost Simple Minds style guitar sounds and a floaty hands-in-the-air breakdown - the kind of track that I find works best as a set opener, outdoors, on a summer morning.
Hellfire Machina’s version is on more of a dubstep tip with the requisite chopped-up Amens and skankin’ key stabs all present and correct, although lacks the excessive amounts of swagger and filth that I like my Dubstep to have. Pick of the three for me which just pips the original to the post is Beta’s more proggy, almost psy-breaks take which tips its hat in the direction of Lee Combs’ seminal ‘Thrust 1’ and ices the cake with some clever chopping and gating work on the vocal creating something which is in equal parts floaty and driving. A solid release.
