It’s always something of interest to me when I see a promo arrive from Dataless Recordings. There’s a consistency in the labels releases which takes some beating so I was keen to check out the latest offering from Lee McNeil with the amusingly titled One Dirty Weekend.
There are four mixes available, two subtle variations from the Carbine Specialists, the original mix and the big room mix and that’s what’s up first. It’s got a good energetic pace with some nice clunky chunky sounds with just enough of a twist to keep things interesting. A big synth with plenty of echo along with the obligatory strings combine well with a fast paced break-beat cover the break before carrying on in a similar vein towards the outro. Big sounds and good drive without being overly fussy, a decent start.
The original feels a little weightier, the bass is meaner and an early break with short synth stabs adds atmosphere. It then takes off on a tech trip, lots of low down twisted elements that build into the break. The lead has been given a work over, the break beat gone for a more traditional breakdown. The drop is worth the wait and we’re back on form with more elements added as we go along. I quite like this one – nasty undertone but still manages a cheeky glint in the eye, good stuff.
The Carbine Specialists mixes are more elegant, and polished. They’re big dreamy affairs that have you floating away on a bed of soft wind synths and high end stabs. This is of course right up to the drop after the break where they get all moody as the lead take on a whole new sound and catches you out a little. It’s another good take on the original and would be a great building track into something more powerful.
